Things to Do in Suqian: History, Water and Open Air

Suqian, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on Huanghe South Road in Sucheng District and you are within a short walk of two very different windows onto Suqian: the ancestral home of Xiang Yu, where the story of the Chu-Han contention is told through relics and an ancient battlefield, and the Suqian Museum, which lays out the city's history, customs and folk art in a single building. Between them they set the tone for a visit that leans on history, water and open air.

Suqian suits travellers who are already in northern Jiangsu and want a day or two of lakeside walking, forest trails and small-scale heritage sites rather than a packed itinerary of headline attractions. Much of what is worth your time sits around Luoma Lake and in Sihong County, so it helps to think of the city as a set of separate clusters rather than one continuous sightseeing zone.

1. The Ancestral Home of Xiang Yu

This site on Huanghe South Road in Sucheng District is the place to go if you want the Chu-Han contention to feel concrete rather than abstract. The scenic area gathers historical relics including Xiang Yu Temple, a Xiang Yu Statue and an ancient battlefield, so you can move through the story in a single visit.

It is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30 and the ticket is ¥80. Because it sits on the same road as the Suqian Museum, the two pair naturally into one half-day; do this one first if you want to be outside while the light is still good.

2. Suqian Museum

On the same stretch of Huanghe South Road, the Suqian Museum is the city's main cultural facility, covering Suqian's history and culture, customs, economic development, social changes and folk art. It is the most efficient way to give context to everything else you see in the area.

It opens daily from 09:00 to 17:00. Combine it with the Ancestral Home of Xiang Yu nearby, and treat the museum as the indoor half of the day if the weather turns.

3. Hongze Lake Wetland Park

Officially the Hongze Lake Wetland National Nature Reserve, this park lies in the southeast of Sihong County, in the northwest of Hongze Lake. It is a freshwater wetland reserve, and the appeal here is the wetland landscape itself rather than built attractions.

It is open daily from 08:00 to 17:30, which gives you a long window, but plan to arrive with enough daylight left to walk properly. It sits in Sihong County, so give it its own block of time rather than trying to squeeze it between city-centre stops.

4. Sihong Ancient Xucheng Scenic Area

Also in Sihong County, in the Southern New City area, this scenic spot is built around historical and cultural heritage, and lets you experience the historical features of the ancient Xu Kingdom. It is a good companion to the wetland park if you are already making the trip out to Sihong.

It is open daily from 08:00 to 22:00, the longest opening window of any site listed here, so it works as an early start or a late finish. Pair it with Hongze Lake Wetland Park to make the journey out to the county worthwhile.

5. San Tai Mountain Forest Park

Full name Jiangsu Santaishan National Forest Park, this is a forest park in the Hubin New District on the shore of Luoma Lake. The combination of woodland and lakeshore makes it the best option here for a longer walk.

It is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, with admission in the ¥20–60 range. Because it sits on the Luoma Lake shore, it fits neatly into a day built around the lake rather than the city centre.

6. Lakeside Park

On Yingchun Avenue in Hubin New Town, Suyu District, Lakeside Park is themed on natural scenery and lakes. It has lakes and lotus ponds as well as cultural features such as the lakeside music fountain, and it is a place for a leisure walk or a ride.

It is the easiest of the lake-area options to slot in around other plans in Suyu District.

7. Luoma Lake Tourist Resort

The resort brings together wetland culture, fishing culture, food culture and canal culture, giving you a concentrated cultural experience rather than a single sight. It is the natural anchor for a day spent on the Suyu District side of the lake.

Combine it with San Tai Mountain Forest Park and Lakeside Park, which are all in the same lake-area cluster, to avoid crossing the city more than once.

8. Zaohe Longyun City

At No. 26 Tongsheng Street in Suyu District, Zaohe Longyun City mixes cultural and museum venues — the Water Conservancy History, Shipping History and Longyun Palace — with entertainment facilities including flying theatres and 5D theatres. It suits travellers who want a mix of exhibits and amusement in one stop.

It is a good wet-weather alternative to the outdoor sites, and it sits in Suyu District, so it can be paired with the Lakeside Park area.

9. Luomahu Happy World

On the Auxiliary Road of Yulan Road, Xiaodian Street, Suyu District, this is a family-oriented attraction with projects such as climbing the peak, a magic castle and jungle crossing. It is designed for parent-child play and family entertainment.

If you are travelling with children, this is the most straightforward choice in the Suyu District cluster. Build the rest of the day around the lake-area sites so you are not doubling back.

10. Jigao Niujiao MOMO Park

In Happy Garden Resort, Niujiao Village, Hubin New District, this park is designed around entertainment projects that combine education with entertainment, so children learn while they play. It is a smaller, gentler option than the larger amusement venues.

It sits in the Hubin New District, the same general area as San Tai Mountain Forest Park and Lakeside Park, so it can be added to a lake-side day without much extra travel.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at the Ancestral Home of Xiang Yu on Huanghe South Road when it opens at 08:30, then walk the short distance to the Suqian Museum, which opens at 09:00, to fill the rest of the morning indoors.

Afternoon: Move to Suyu District and the lake area. Spend the early afternoon at Lakeside Park, then continue to San Tai Mountain Forest Park on the shore of Luoma Lake before its 17:00 close.

Evening: Finish at Luoma Lake Tourist Resort, where the wetland, fishing, food and canal culture elements give you an easy end to the day without needing another timed entry.

When is the Ancestral Home of Xiang Yu open, and what does it cost?

It is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30, and admission is ¥80.

Which sites are in Sihong County rather than the city centre?

Sihong Ancient Xucheng Scenic Area and Hongze Lake Wetland Park are both in Sihong County, so they need their own block of time away from Sucheng and Suyu Districts.

What can I do in Suqian with children?

Luomahu Happy World, Zaohe Longyun City and Jigao Niujiao MOMO Park all offer entertainment aimed at families, with Zaohe Longyun City also including museum-style venues such as the Water Conservancy History and Shipping History exhibits.

Which sites are best if I want to be outdoors?

Lakeside Park, San Tai Mountain Forest Park, Hongze Lake Wetland Park and the Luoma Lake Tourist Resort are the outdoor options, with San Tai Mountain Forest Park open daily from 09:00 to 17:00 and Hongze Lake Wetland Park from 08:00 to 17:30.

Decide which side of Suqian you want to base yourself on — the Huanghe South Road museums and heritage sites, or the Luoma Lake and Sihong County clusters — and start building your days around the opening times above.
