Things to Do in Lianyungang: An Island and a Mountain by the Sea

Lianyungang, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on the sea dyke at Lian Island and the Yellow Sea is on both sides of you, with Haizhou Bay opening to the north and the wooded slopes of the island rising behind. This is a port city whose name joins an island and a mountain, and both are within reach of a day's wandering.

Lianyungang suits travellers who want a coastal stop with a literary legend attached, and who are happy to move between a mountain trail, a beach and a small city museum without much fuss. The climate is a humid monsoon one with maritime touches: cold and dry in winter, hot and rainy in summer, and most of the rain falls between June and August.

1. Mount Huaguo

Mount Huaguo and Shuilian Cave are the home of the legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong, in the story Journey to the West. The cave's name means Water Curtain Hole, from the legend that it was hidden behind a waterfall. The scenic area has many peaks, and Yunu Peak is the highest in Jiangsu.

Opening hours run 08:00-16:00 from December to February and 07:00-16:30 from March to November. Admission is ¥50 in the low season and ¥90 from March to November. Tourist Bus 1, 2 and 6 and bus B11 all serve the site.

2. Lian Island

Lian Island is a beachfront resort island connected to Lianyun District by a 6.7 km sea dyke, the longest in China. It has two main beach and swimming areas, several places to eat and hotels, and an annual music event featuring well-known Chinese pop stars.

The water is suitable for swimming for part of the year according to national standards, so check the season before planning a swim. The island is also close to the Haizhou Bay fishery, which is why seafood is abundant here.

3. Sumawan Beach

Sumawan is one of the beaches on Lian Island. From the city centre, take bus 101, 102, 103, 104 or 105 to Xugou, then transfer at the Xugou KFC to bus 33, which drops you near the first beach.

Walk to the right along the wooden pathway for about 30 minutes to reach the small private beach. Admission is ¥50, or you can buy a tourist card in Xinpu for ¥68 that also covers Monkey Mountain and the beach.

4. Fenghuangwan Haibin

Fenghuangwan Haibin is a coastal area to the north-east of Lianyungang. From the city centre, catch the Xinpu-Lianyun train and transfer to bus 31.

It pairs naturally with the other coastal stops on this list, so it works well as an afternoon addition to a beach day rather than a destination on its own.

5. Lianyungang Museum

The city's main museum sits on Chaoyang Road East in Haizhou District, across the road from the Lianyungang City Government. Take bus no. 50, b12, b12k or Tourist Bus 1 and get off at the City Government bus stop.

From November to March it opens 09:00-16:00 with no entry after 15:30; from April to October it opens 09:00-17:00 with no entry after 16:30. It is closed on Mondays and admission is free.

6. Kongwang Mountain Cliff Statue

Kongwang Mountain Cliff Statue is one of the area's protected heritage sites. It opens 07:00-17:00.

Because it keeps long hours, it can be slotted in early or late in the day around the mountain and coastal stops.

7. Erlangshen Cultural Relics Park

Erlangshen Cultural Relics Park is at Wulongkou in Guannan County. To get there, take a long-distance bus to Guannan Bus Terminal or Chengdong Bus Terminal, then transfer to the local bus to Erlang Scenic Area.

From April to October it opens 08:30-17:30, and from November to March 08:30-17:00. Admission is ¥30.

8. Yinwan Han Tomb

Yinwan Han Tomb lies south-west of Yin Wan Village in Hot Springs Town, Donghai County. It is a protected cultural relic site, and Yin Wan Han tomb slips were found here.

Admission is free. Because it sits out in Donghai County, treat it as a half-day trip rather than a quick stop.

9. Stone Carvings in Langya County, East China Sea

These boundary stone carvings are in Lianyungang District and are a protected heritage site. They open 09:00-21:00 and admission is free.

The late closing time makes this an easy option to combine with other sights earlier in the day.

10. Memorial to the Establishment of the Chinese Communist Party's Special East China Sea Branch at White Tiger Mountain

This memorial pavilion stands at White Tiger Mountain. It is a small, focused stop rather than a full attraction.

Pair it with other stops in the same part of the city rather than making a special journey for it alone.

11. Mount Kangri Martyrs' Cemetery

Mount Kangri Martyrs' Cemetery is a memorial site with free admission.

As with the other memorial sites on this list, it rewards a quiet visit and combines well with a wider day of heritage stops.

12. Donghai County crystal workshops and the China Donghai International Crystal Festival

Donghai County is a natural crystal raw materials distribution centre, and visitors can take part in the biennial China Donghai International Crystal Festival to experience crystal culture.

Because the festival is held every two years, check the timing before you build a trip around it.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at Mount Huaguo, arriving when the gates open, and see Shuilian Cave, the legendary home of the Monkey King. Tourist Bus 1, 2 or 6 and bus B11 will get you there.

Afternoon: Head to the coast. Take the Xinpu-Lianyun train and transfer to bus 31 for Fenghuangwan Haibin, or continue to Lian Island and Sumawan Beach for the sand and seafood. If you would rather stay in the city, Lianyungang Museum on Chaoyang Road East is free and open until 16:00 or 17:00 depending on the season, though it closes on Mondays.

Evening: Finish at the Stone Carvings in Langya County, East China Sea, which stay open until 21:00 and are free, then eat near the coast where the Haizhou Bay fishery supplies the seafood.
