Where to Stay in Yanbu's Three Coastal Sections

Yanbu, Saudi Arabia

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Yanbu is a Red Sea port city in Medina Province, shaped by both its working harbour and its petrochemical industry. For a visitor, that means a place with a waterfront, a historic downtown, and a newer, greener residential and industrial zone, all strung along the coast.

The city is divided into three primary sections, each roughly fifteen minutes apart by car: Yanbu Al-Bahr in the north, Yanbu Al-Nakhal inland, and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya in the south. Because the sections are spread out and driving is the practical way to move between them, where you base yourself decides what you can walk to and how far you sit in the car. This guide covers which of those areas suits different kinds of trips, and what standard of accommodation to expect at each level.

Best areas to stay in Yanbu

1. Yanbu Al-Bahr

This is the northern section of the city and its historic heart. The downtown area, also called Al-Balad, holds most of the population and most of the everyday life: restaurants catering to the area's many ethnic groups alongside international chains, coffee shops, a shopping mall and various shopping centres. Parts of the old town are worn and many historic buildings remain in disrepair, while the edges of the district are modernising with new shopping centres. Prince Abdulmohsen Bin Abdulaziz International Airport sits at the edge of this area.

It suits first-time visitors and anyone who wants to be near the airport, the largest concentration of food and shopping, and the city's older fabric. Several local and international brand hotels are located here, and there is a gated residential compound next to one of them. Expect a lived-in, busy feel rather than a polished resort one.

2. Yanbu Al-Sina'iya

The southernmost section, known locally as the Royal Commission, is split between an industrial zone of refineries and petrochemical installations and a residential area directly north of it. The residential side is more modern, clean, organised and greener than downtown, with international and local restaurants, two shopping malls, shopping centres, supermarkets, hospitals, banks and coffee shops. A new waterfront project is being developed along the coastline of Yanbu Industrial City, with phases covering a campground, gardens, a marina and islands, a recreation area with a hotel, and an aquarium.

This area suits travellers who prefer newer surroundings, quieter streets and self-contained amenities, and it is where most of the city's Western expatriate population lives. It is the furthest section from the historic downtown, so you will rely on a car to reach the older parts of Yanbu.

3. Yanbu Al-Nakhal

Meaning "the Palms", this is a separate area inland, with the village of Jabriyya as its most notable settlement and the local government office. It has a general hospital, a bank, filling stations, a fire station, two malls and several recreational facilities, so basic needs are covered, but the choice of services is much smaller than in Yanbu Al-Bahr or the Royal Commission. Radwah Mountain is visible throughout the town.

It suits travellers who specifically want an inland base and do not mind a limited range of amenities. Note that the town has no hotels, so it is not a practical place to book accommodation; it is worth knowing about mainly so you understand the distance involved if you plan to visit.

Where to stay on a budget, mid-range or splurge

Best area for a first visit

Base yourself in Yanbu Al-Bahr. It puts you in the downtown area with the widest choice of restaurants, coffee shops and shopping, close to the airport, and within reach of the historic buildings the government is working to improve. From there you can drive south to the Royal Commission and its waterfront when you want the newer, greener side of the city.
