Tolyatti is a city on the Volga built around a single industry: the AvtoVAZ car plant and the Lada. It suits travellers who are here for work or industry, and anyone who prefers a planned, contemporary environment over the older parts of town. Expect the city's more recent residential and commercial development rather than historic fabric.
2. Tsentralny (Stary Gorod)
Tsentralny, or Stary Gorod, the Old City, is the home of the city government and the industrial centre. It is the administrative heart of Tolyatti, and for a visitor who wants to be near the city's civic life and its central institutions, it is the most practical choice.
This area suits first-time visitors who want a central position and easy access to the city's main functions. Note that "Old City" is relative here: almost all of Tolyatti's cultural points of interest date from the Soviet period, since the reservoir destroyed much of the earlier city.
3. Komsomolsky
Komsomolsky is the oldest of the three districts, built to house the builders of the hydroelectric plant. Its origins give it a distinct identity within the city, and it is the area to consider if you are interested in the earliest layer of modern Tolyatti's story.
It suits visitors who want to understand how the city grew, and those who prefer a quieter, more residential setting away from the newer districts. As with the rest of Tolyatti, the sights here are Soviet-era rather than older.

How do I get around Tolyatti?
Public transport includes municipal buses and trolley-buses, plus commercial minibuses known as marshrutkas. The city is also linked to the federal road network by the M5 "Ural" highway.
How do I reach Tolyatti from outside the city?
There are two bus stations, two railway stations and a city harbour. Tolyatti has its own airport, but it is used by personal aircraft only; the nearest international airport is Kurumoch, about 40 km away towards Samara.
