Where to Stay in Craiova's City Centre

Craiova, Romania

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Craiova is the largest city in southwestern Romania and the main commercial centre of Oltenia, set on the east bank of the river Jiu roughly halfway between the Southern Carpathians and the Danube. It has long been a trading and administrative city, and its centre reflects that: a compact core of historic streets, churches and 19th-century buildings, ringed by the housing estates built in the later 20th century.

For a visitor, the practical question is whether to base yourself in the downtown core, where the historic sights, restaurants and services cluster within walking distance, or in one of the surrounding residential districts, which are quieter and generally cheaper but put you further from the centre.

1. Downtown (central Craiova)

The downtown core is where the city's historic fabric, its main commercial streets and most of its visitor-facing services are concentrated. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the centre's sights and the largest choice of places to eat, and it is the most convenient base for a first visit or a short stay.

Accommodation in this area spans the full range, from simple three-star guesthouses to boutique hotels in older buildings and more modern, recently furnished hotels. Some rooms in the central hotels look out toward the Metropolitan Cathedral, depending on where the room is located.

2. Outlying and residential districts

Beyond the centre, Craiova spreads into a series of residential districts and administered villages, including the housing estates built from the 1960s onward and the villages on the city's edges. These areas are quieter and more local in character, and they suit travellers with a car, those staying longer, or anyone prioritising a lower price over proximity to the sights.

Some of the lower-priced accommodation sits in tucked-away homestay locations at the end of residential streets, sometimes with a garden. The trade-off is distance: you will rely on transport to reach the centre rather than walking, and breakfast is not always provided at this level.

Where to stay on a budget, mid-range or splurge

Best area for a first visit

Downtown is the best base for a first visit. It keeps you within walking distance of the historic centre, the cathedral and the main concentration of restaurants and services, so you spend your time in the city rather than travelling across it. It also offers the widest spread of accommodation levels, which makes it easy to match the area to your budget.

Should I stay downtown or in a residential district?

Stay downtown if you want to walk to the sights and have the widest choice of restaurants and hotels. Choose a residential district if you prefer quieter surroundings and a lower price, and do not mind depending on transport to reach the centre.

What kind of accommodation can I expect in the centre?

The centre has three-star guesthouses at the basic end, boutique and formal hotels in the middle, and a small number of higher-end properties. Several of the mid-range and upper properties have their own restaurant, and some offer a breakfast buffet.

Is breakfast usually included?

It varies. Hotels with an on-site restaurant commonly serve breakfast, either as a buffet or à la carte, while some of the cheaper homestays do not provide breakfast at all.

Can I walk to the main sights from my accommodation?

If you base yourself downtown, yes — the historic core and the cathedral area are within walking distance. From the outlying districts and villages, you will need transport.
