Where to Stay in Coban: Highlands Base for Travellers

Coban, Guatemala

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Cobán sits in the highlands of central Guatemala, in the department of Alta Verapaz. It is a working city rather than a resort town, and most travellers treat it as a base: they pass through for a night or two, use it as a launch point for the surrounding countryside, and move on.

For a visitor, the practical geography is simple. The main plaza is the anchor of the centre, with the greatest concentration of places to stay in the blocks around it. A second cluster sits on the main road as you enter the city, and a third lies further out along the road south towards Guatemala City. This guide covers those areas, who each one suits, and what to expect at different budgets. It does not recommend individual properties.

1. Around the main plaza

This is the default choice for most visitors. A number of small hotels sit around the main plaza, and they are broadly comparable in price to one another, which makes the centre a low-risk place to land if you have not booked ahead. It also puts you within walking distance of the life of the city rather than on its edge.

It suits first-time visitors and anyone staying only a night or two, since you can arrive, find a room and reach everything in the centre on foot. The trade-off is that this is the busy heart of town, so expect the ordinary noise of a central location.

2. The main road into Cobán

Rooms and bungalows here can accommodate families and large groups, which is unusual for Cobán and makes this the area to consider if you are travelling with children or as a group rather than as a solo traveller or couple.

The practical point is that you are on the approach road rather than in the centre, so you are trading a central location for space and group capacity. The hillside setting is part of the character of this strip.

3. South of the centre, towards Guatemala City

There are hotels away from the centre, including at least one about fifteen minutes south of Cobán on the road towards Guatemala City.

It might suit you if you are arriving late from the Guatemala City direction, or leaving early that way, and want to shorten your morning. Otherwise, the centre gives you more for the same money.

Where to stay on a budget, mid-range or splurge

Best area for a first visit

Stay around the main plaza. It is where the greatest number of small hotels are concentrated, they are priced comparably to each other, and you can see a room before you take it. For a stay of a night or two, which is what most visitors to Cobán make, the centre removes the need to travel in from an outlying area for everything you want to do.

How long do most visitors stay in Cobán?

Tourists tend to spend only a night or two in the city. Plan your accommodation around a short stay rather than a long one, and do not over-commit to an outlying area for a single night.

Should I book ahead or find a room on arrival?

There are a number of small hotels around the main plaza and most are comparable in price, so arriving and looking is a reasonable approach in the centre. If you need family rooms or bungalows, or you are travelling as a large group, the main-road area has the capacity and is worth arranging in advance.

Is the cheapest room a good deal?

Not necessarily. A low price in Cobán is not by itself a sign of value.

Are the hotels outside the centre worth it?

Generally not for the prices charged.

Compare live prices for the areas above with the booking tools on this page before you decide where to base yourself.
