Where to Stay in Yangjiang: Coastal Bases for Stays

Yangjiang, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Yangjiang sits on the South China Sea coast in southwestern Guangdong, a prefecture-level city on the Moyang River with a humid subtropical climate: mild, sometimes wet winters, heavy summer rain, and a sunny, dry autumn. For a visitor, the practical draw is the coast — Hailing Island and Zhapo Beach, reached via Shapa Town — alongside an urban core with its own commercial and lakeside districts.

For booking purposes, the city divides into two useful bases: the island and beach zone out at Hailing Island, and the central city area around Jiangcheng District, where the main commercial and lakeside neighbourhoods sit. The two are connected by local bus lines. This guide covers which of these areas to choose, who each suits, and what to expect at different price levels.

1. Hailing Island (near Shapa Town)

This is the coastal base, on Hailing Island by Zhapo Beach and Shapa Town. It suits visitors whose priority is the sea — beach time, swimming, and a resort-style stay — rather than city sightseeing. Accommodation here is resort-oriented, and the area is served by bus no. 31, the ZP (Xialang-bound) line, and bus nos. 1 and 3.

Because it sits away from the urban core, plan on bus travel or taxis for anything in the city centre. It is the better choice if you would rather wake up near the water than near the shops.

2. Central Yangjiang (Jiangcheng District)

The city centre is the urban base, with commercial areas such as Mingyang Square and streets like Dongfeng 3rd Road and Wenchang Road. It suits first-time visitors who want to be in the middle of things, travellers on shorter trips, and anyone mixing business with leisure.

Parts of the centre are quiet and close to Yuanyang Lake, which is suitable for walking, and the area is easy to navigate by taxi and other transport. Bus nos. 16 and 17 serve this zone. Choose it if you want restaurants, shops and transport links on your doorstep rather than a beach outside your window.

Where to stay on a budget, mid-range or splurge

Best area for a first visit

For a first visit, base yourself in central Yangjiang (Jiangcheng District). It puts you in the commercial heart of the city, close to Yuanyang Lake for walking, with taxis and buses making it straightforward to reach the coast as a day trip. If the beach is the whole point of your trip, stay on Hailing Island instead.

How do I get between Hailing Island and central Yangjiang?

By bus. Bus no. 31 and the ZP (Xialang-bound) line serve the Hailing Island area, and bus nos. 16 and 17 serve parts of the city centre. Taxis are also an option from the central districts.

When is the best time of year to visit Yangjiang?

Autumn is sunny and dry, and winter begins sunny and dry before turning wetter and cloudier. Summer brings the heaviest rain, with most of the annual rainfall falling from May to August, though it is also the sunniest season.

Is Yangjiang a good base for beach holidays?

Yes, if you stay on Hailing Island, which is where Zhapo Beach and the resort-style accommodation are located, near Shapa Town.

How far is Yangjiang from Guangzhou?

About 190 km, or roughly 2.5 hours by bus.
