Where to Stay in Liupanshui

Liupanshui, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Liupanshui sits in western Guizhou on the slopes of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, a city spread across a cool, high-altitude landscape of karst hills. Its mild summers have earned it the local name "Cool City", and its draws are minority folk culture, karst scenery and the legacy of the Third Front construction period.

For a visitor, the practical question is which of the city's constituent areas to use as a base. The city is made up of Zhongshan District, Shuicheng District, Liuzhi Special District and Panzhou City, and the sights are scattered between them. This guide covers the areas that make sense as a base, what each suits, and how to think about budget levels.

Best areas to stay in Liupanshui

1. Zhongshan District

Zhongshan District is the city centre, and it is the most practical base for a first visit. It is where you find the main urban amenities of Liupanshui, and it puts you within reach of the Guizhou Third Front Construction Museum.

It also has the best transport connections: Liupanshui is a major rail hub in southwestern China, with the Shanghai-Kunming, Liupanshui-Baiguo and Neijiang-Kunming railways intersecting in the city, and the airport lies at the junction of Damu Village in Yuezhao Township, Zhongshan District, about 15 kilometres from the city centre by ordinary road. Choose this area if you want to arrive, settle in and reach the rest of the region by rail or air with the least friction.

2. Shuicheng District

Shuicheng District is the base for the natural sights to the west. Yushe National Park, which includes the Jiucai Ping Scenic Zone, lies here, as does the Shuicheng Francois's Leaf Monkey Nature Reserve.

This suits travellers whose priority is karst landforms, mountain scenery and the sunrise and sea-of-clouds views around Jiucai Ping, rather than city conveniences. Note that Jiucai Ping is the tallest mountain in Guizhou Province at about 2,900 metres, so this is high ground and the climate is cooler than the city centre.

3. Panzhou City

Panzhou is a county-level city within Liupanshui, in the south of the prefecture. It is the area to consider if your interest is minority folk culture: the Bai communities of Jiuying, Gaotun, Yangchangba, Luna, Shahe and the Shui community of Panguan are all in Pan County.

It also has a strong food identity, being the home of Panxian ham, which takes a year to develop its characteristic flavour and can be eaten raw when aged three years or more. Base here if you want to combine village visits with local cuisine, and accept that you are further from the city centre and its rail and air links.

4. Liuzhi Special District

Liuzhi Special District lies in the east of the prefecture. It is known for its Gelao communities, in Langdai, Xinhua and Duoque.

This is a quieter, more rural base suited to travellers focused on ethnic culture rather than city amenities. As with the other outlying areas, plan around the fact that you are some distance from the main urban centre and its transport hubs.

Where to stay on a budget, mid-range or splurge

Best area for a first visit

Zhongshan District is the best base for a first visit. It is the city centre, it holds the Guizhou Third Front Construction Museum, and it is where the railways and the airport connection converge, so you can reach the karst and minority-culture sights as day trips without moving your bags. Once you know which sights matter most to you, you can add a night or two in Shuicheng, Panzhou or Liuzhi.
