Where to Stay in Yongzhou

Yongzhou, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Yongzhou is a prefecture-level city in southern Hunan, sitting on the southern bank of the Xiang River where the Xiao and Xiang Rivers meet, with Guangdong to the southeast and Guangxi to the southwest. It is one of Hunan's older urban centres, and its territory stretches from the river confluence out into the Nan Mountains, which makes the climate vary noticeably across the area.

For a visitor, the practical geography is simple: the built-up city is made up of two urban districts, Lengshuitan and Lingling, and the airport sits between them, roughly 7 kilometres from the northern edge of Lingling and the southern edge of Lengshuitan. The rest of the prefecture is county-level territory — Qiyang, Dong'an, Dao County, Ningyuan, Jiangyong, Lanshan, Xintian, Shuangpai and Jianghua — reached by road or rail. This guide covers which of these places makes sense as a base, and what kind of accommodation to expect at each budget level.

Best areas to stay in Yongzhou

1. Lengshuitan District

Lengshuitan is one of the two urban districts that form the built-up city, and it is the side of Yongzhou with the most conventional city infrastructure. If you want to be in the modern urban centre rather than the older quarter, this is where you base yourself. Accommodation here is aimed at business and transit travellers, with mid-range chain hotels offering the usual services — parking, meeting rooms, restaurants and a 24-hour front desk.

The district is well connected: Yongzhou Railway Station serves the city, and the airport lies a short distance from the southern end of Lengshuitan. National Highway 207 and National Highway 322 also pass through the area, which matters if you plan to travel onward to the counties.

2. Lingling District

Lingling is the other urban district and the historic heart of the city, the seat of the old prefecture and the part of Yongzhou recognised for its historical and cultural character. Stay here if your interest is in the older city and the river setting rather than in modern commercial districts. Lingling Railway Station gives it its own rail access, and the airport is about 7 kilometres from the northern end of the district.

Because Lingling and Lengshuitan are separate urban cores rather than one continuous centre, choose your district deliberately: the two are linked by road, but you will not be walking between them. Note also that spring here is very rainy, with May the wettest month, so a base with easy indoor access to transport is worth considering if you travel in that season.

3. The county-level areas

Outside the two urban districts, Yongzhou's territory is made up of Qiyang, Dong'an, Dao County, Ningyuan, Jiangyong, Lanshan, Xintian, Shuangpai and Jianghua Yao Autonomous County. These are separate towns and counties rather than city neighbourhoods, and they suit travellers whose plans focus on a specific part of the prefecture rather than on the city itself. Jianghua is a Yao autonomous county, which makes it relevant if you want to spend time in a minority area.

Base in a county only if it is where your onward travel actually goes. The rail lines through the area — the Hunan–Guangxi and Luo–Zhan railways — and the two national highways are what connect these places, so check your route before committing to a county base.

Where to stay on a budget, mid-range or splurge

Best area for a first visit

Lengshuitan District is the most practical base for a first visit. It is one of the two urban districts that make up the built-up city, it is served by Yongzhou Railway Station, and it sits close to the airport, so you can arrive and move around without depending on a long transfer. From there, Lingling and its historic core are reachable by road, which lets you see both sides of the city from a single base.

Frequently asked questions

Which district should I choose, Lengshuitan or Lingling?

Choose Lengshuitan for transport links and modern city amenities, and Lingling if you want to be in the older, historically recognised part of the city. They are separate urban districts, so you will travel between them by road rather than on foot.

How do I get to Yongzhou?

By air through Yongzhou Lingling Airport, which lies between the two urban districts, or by rail through Yongzhou Railway Station, Lingling Railway Station or Yongzhou East Railway Station. The city is also on China National Highways 207 and 322.

When is the best time to visit?

Autumn is the driest season, and July and August are the sunniest months. Spring is very rainy, with May the wettest month, and from January to May more than half the days in each month typically see some precipitation. Summers are hot and humid; winters are mild and brief but turn wet and gloomy as the season goes on.

Should I stay in the city or out in the counties?

Stay in the city if you want the widest choice of accommodation and the easiest transport connections. Stay in one of the county-level areas — such as Qiyang, Dao County, Ningyuan, Jiangyong or Jianghua — only if that specific place is the focus of your trip, since they are separate destinations rather than city neighbourhoods.
