Where to Stay in Lubango: Highland Stays

Lubango, Angola

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Lubango sits high on the Huíla Plateau, in a valley ringed by mountain slopes and a scenic park that climbs above the city. The altitude shapes the day: warm and humid by afternoon, cool to cold at night, with June and July the coldest stretch and the heaviest rain falling between December and March.

For a visitor, the city is compact enough to explore on foot, and shared taxis run in circles around the centre, with private taxis marked "PARTICULAR" if you prefer to hire one. The practical choice is between basing yourself centrally, within walking distance of the main square and the government buildings, or staying a short drive out in the quieter parkland north-west of town. This guide covers those options and what each suits.

1. Central Lubango

The area around Praça Agostinho Neto and the Palácio do Governo Provincial puts you in the middle of the city, close to the cathedral, the commerce hall and the main shopping plaza. This is the most practical base for a first visit, since you can walk to much of what you want to see and pick up shared taxis easily when you would rather ride.

You find budget and simple residencial-style accommodation here, including places on Rua 10 de Dezembro and R. do Piqute. It suits first-time visitors, anyone without a car, and travellers who want to be close to banks, ATMs and markets. Expect some city noise, and note that the centre is where you will feel the cold nights most keenly if your room is not well insulated.

2. Mapunda and the parkland north-west of the centre

About five kilometres north-west of the city centre, this area is built around a quiet park with springboks, zebras, ostriches and crocodiles, and guided safari walks. It is a different kind of stay from the centre: calm, green and oriented towards the outdoors rather than the streets.

This suits travellers with their own transport or a willingness to take a taxi into town, families, and anyone who values quiet and space over convenience. Accommodation here takes the form of bungalows with a restaurant terrace and panoramic views. The trade-off is the distance from the centre, so plan on taxis for meals, errands and sightseeing in town.

Where to stay on a budget, mid-range or splurge

Best area for a first visit

Central Lubango is the best base for a first visit. It puts you within walking distance of the main square, the government buildings and the shopping plaza, and shared taxis circling the city are easy to pick up. Staying central also means you can spend your time on the city rather than on getting into it.

Do I need a car to get around Lubango?

No. Walking is a good way to explore the centre, shared taxis run in circles around the city, and private taxis marked "PARTICULAR" can be hired. Buses run by SGO are also available. A car or taxi is more useful if you base yourself in the parkland outside the centre.

What should I pack for the climate?

Lubango is one of the highest places in Angola and is regarded as its coldest city, so bring warm layers for the evenings and for June and July in particular. Days are warm and humid, and the heaviest rain falls between December and March.

Can I pay by card or use ATMs?

ATMs are available around the city and disburse kwanza, the local currency. Banks such as BAI and BPC offer financial services, and it is possible to receive funds from outside Angola by electronic transfer. In the markets, both US dollars and kwanza are accepted.

Where is the main shopping area?

The main shopping plaza is a newly built mall called "Milleneum", where daily products as well as cosmetics, shoes and clothes are available. It sits within the central part of the city.
