The air near the Shinano River thickens with anticipation as the first sparks ignite against the night sky, signaling the start of one of Japan's most storied pyrotechnic displays.

Witness the Grandeur of the Nagaoka Festival

Timing your visit to the first week of August allows you to experience the city at its most vibrant. The Nagaoka festival takes place from August 1st through August 3rd. On the evening of August 1st, the festivities begin with a dedicated evening event, leading into two days of spectacular fireworks launched along the Shinano River. During these two nights, approximately 20,000 fireworks fill the sky, creating a massive display over the water.

Afternoon Escapes and Cinema

When you aren't watching the river skies, the city offers modern comforts for your afternoon itinerary. You can visit T-JOY Cinemas (T・ジョイ長岡) to experience large, modern theaters that feature 3-D movie screenings. For a special way to enjoy a film, admission is set at ¥1000 on the first day of every month.

Plan your trip for early August to ensure you are in Nagaoka when the fireworks reach their peak intensity along the riverbanks.
