Yingge Dance and Seasonal Celebration Squares
Time your visit to catch the Yingge dance at Jieyang Tower Square—a traditional folk performance with more than 300 years of history, performed during the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, and major celebrations. The dance is held as a symbol of promoting good and suppressing evil, auspiciousness and peace, and has deep roots in local community life. Performances last at least half an hour. The Mid-Autumn Festival (September 24–26) and National Day Golden Week (October 1–6) bring gatherings and festivities to public squares where locals and visitors move between venues through the evening.
Traditional Arts in Intimate Settings
Visit the Jieyang Chaozhou Opera Inheritance and Protection Center to experience Chaozhou opera, also known as "Chaoyin opera" and "Baizi opera," which formed before the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. Tours last at least 45 minutes and are free. The opera's 10 kinds of ugly roles and 7 kinds of female roles are particularly distinctive. Jieyang holds the title of "hometown of drama" and "hometown of small drama"—an identity rooted in centuries of performance tradition. For a different artform, head to Yuhu Village to see iron rod puppets (paper shadow play), a unique Chaoshan art form present in eastern Guangdong for about 700 years. Figures carved from cowhide are colored and projected onto transparent white paper by oil lamp light inside the stage. Tours last at least 30 minutes and are free; buses No. 1, No. 18, New Energy Line 3, or No. 2 pass near Gangkou Village station to reach it.
Waterside Celebrations and River Traditions
Dragon boat racing takes place on Jieyang Rongjiang during the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, a tradition tied to commemoration and local legend. Performances last at least 45 minutes and are free to watch. The races draw crowds to the water's edge as teams compete, their boats cutting through the river in a spectacle with roots in Chu State history.
Tea Culture and Evening Drinking
Jieyang and its surrounding region produce several types of oolong tea suited to evening consumption. Chaoshan Tie Guan Yin, possibly produced locally, is known for its distinctive roasting process and unique aroma. Fenghuang Dancong, a single-tree variety oolong, takes advantage of the area's proximity to Fenghuang Mountain and offers an elegant taste. White Hair Oolong and White Hair Green Tea, with their refined qualities and fresh aromas, are also produced in the region. These teas are central to Jieyang's evening social life, served in tea houses and homes throughout the city as the sun sets.
