This doesn't mean there's nothing to do; it means the evening has a defined shape. Start with dinner, move to drinks at one of the bar clusters, and if you're staying out, know that the window closes relatively early.
What You'll Find: Bars, Karaoke, and Budget Drinking
Dalian's drinking scene caters to locals, foreign business people, and the teaching community. The venues themselves span several types:

Live Music and Entertainment Beyond Bars
For those seeking culture with their evening out, Zhongshan District hosts theatres and concert halls presenting local and international performances. A few bars and hotels also offer live music. If you're a cinema-goer, note that English-language screenings are extremely rare at the central cluster of cinemas around Youhao Square, which mainly cater to local audiences. Better options for non-Mandarin speakers are the Warner-Wanda cinema on the north side of Olympic Square (Xigang District), Ownar Cineplex in the He Ping shopping centre north of Xinghai Square (Shahekou District), or the theater at Roosevelt Shopping Center. During the football season (March–November), catching a match at the People's Stadium in Xigang District gives insight into football's deep role in Dalian's local identity.
The Dalian Beer Festival: Late July and Early August
If you're planning a trip in late July or early August, the Dalian Beer Festival runs for 10 days at Xinghai Square and draws thousands of visitors. The daytime crowd comes for food and music acts; the evening shifts towards beer and live performances. Vendors include domestic and regional breweries alongside international sellers offering beer from Germany and the U.S. Admission is ¥10, with food around ¥30 and beer around ¥50.
Start planning around the three bar clusters if you want concentrated nightlife, or explore scattered venues if you prefer to wander.
