Evening walks along the water and into old streets
Start your evening by strolling along the Xiaoqinhuaihe Canal that crosses the city's historical center. The narrow lanes of the few surviving blocks of the old city cluster nearby, and walking them at dusk gives you a sense of how Yangzhou once moved—a place that grew wealthy on salt, silk, and trade, where merchant families built gardens that emperors came to visit. The canal itself is the natural gathering point, and locals do their evening constitutionals here as the light softens.
Late-afternoon exercise and wetland boardwalks
Head to Songjiacheng Sports and Recreation Park on an island east of the Slender West Lake Scenic Area. Entry is free, and the park opens at 17:30—perfect timing if you want to catch the tail end of daylight. The park has gone through several lives: it was a wetlands nature reserve, then an archaeological site, and is now a sports facility, but the boardwalks through the marshes from its nature-park days remain. You can rent bicycles at the station outside the western gate and ride the 3,200-meter bicycle trail that loops the perimeter, or simply walk the wooden paths. Access the park from Changchun Road (southern or western gates) or Shouxihu Road (eastern gate). On a summer day, you can walk the boardwalk trail north to Baozhang Lake—a popular local swimming spot about 2 kilometers from downtown—starting from outside the southern gate of Songjiacheng.
Where to drink in the evening
Yangzhou's beer culture centers on Snow (雪花啤酒), a Shenyang brew that costs around ¥3 for a large bottle and is the most popular local choice. If you want something with a stronger beer character, the L-Mart at the Living Mall (京华城) stocks Kirin Japanese beer brewed in Taiwan for ¥5 a can. The Living Mall also houses a Starbucks, conveniently positioned between the train station and the RT-Mart if you want coffee instead.
Timing your visit around festivals
The Mid-Autumn Festival in late September (in 2026, September 24–26) draws people out into the city to mark the occasion. National Day falls on September 30, 2026, with the National Day Golden Week holiday extending from October 1–6, when the city fills with visitors and the streets take on a festive atmosphere. August's Spirit Festival (August 26 in 2026) is another moment worth knowing about for timing a longer stay.
