Chitungwiza

Introduction

Chitungwiza is a large urban centre in Harare Province, Zimbabwe, sitting on the outskirts of the capital, Harare. As one of the country's major urban centres, it forms part of the wider Harare metropolitan area, making it a practical base if you are exploring the region around the capital.

Getting around

Chitungwiza has no metro, tram or unified transport card, and almost everything is paid for in cash on boarding. There is no dedicated tourist transport network, so you will rely on the same options residents use: kombis (informal minibuses), metered taxis and pre-booked private drivers. Kombis run set routes and cost far less than taxis, but they are crowded and operate without fixed timetables; they suit short, flexible trips if you are travelling light. Taxis can be arranged through hotels or found at ranks, and private drivers are the most flexible choice if you want to combine several stops in a day or carry luggage. For most visitors, a taxi or pre-booked driver is the more practical way to get around.

Agree your fare in US dollars before boarding, confirm whether it is per car or per person, and check whether tolls and parking are included. Note the vehicle registration and avoid sharing with strangers late at night. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Grab are not widely established here, so do not count on an app-based pickup. Chitungwiza has no airport of its own; you arrive through Harare and continue by road, most likely via the two main highways linking the city to the capital, Seke Road and Chitungwiza Road. Allow extra time for the transfer, and if you are driving yourself, note that Zimbabwe uses left-hand traffic, foreign licences are generally accepted (with an International Driving Permit strongly recommended for non-English-language licences), and police roadblocks are common. Major highways are paved but potholed, with livestock and pedestrians near towns, so avoid driving after dark.

Chitungwiza is a sprawling urban area rather than a compact, walkable centre, so treat walking as a way to cover short local distances — between a drop-off point and a specific destination — rather than as a primary way to cross the city. For anything beyond a short stroll, plan on a kombi, taxi or private car.

Three days in Chitungwiza

Day one: Base yourself in Chitungwiza and get your bearings in the town itself, which sits in Harare Province within Zimbabwe. As you settle in, agree your transport for the stay, since kombis and taxis are the main ways to get around. For longer trips, note that ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Grab may be available, though coverage can vary. Allow extra time for journeys along Seke Road and Chitungwiza Road, the key routes linking the town with Harare.

Day two: Head into Harare, the capital, using Seke Road or Chitungwiza Road. English is widely spoken, which makes getting around and asking for directions straightforward. Major roads can be busy, so carry small change for kombis and taxis and keep your belongings secure. If you plan to drive yourself, an International Driving Permit is useful to have. Book your return transport in advance so you are not stranded later in the day.

Day three: Use your final day to move between Chitungwiza and Harare at an easy pace, revisiting anything you missed. Keep your plans flexible, as travel times on Seke Road and Chitungwiza Road can vary. Agree fares before you set off, whether you use kombis, taxis or a ride-hailing app. Note that US dollars are commonly accepted, so carry a mix of small notes for everyday costs.
