Mufulira

Introduction

Mufulira is a town in Zambia's Copperbelt Province, and its name means "Place of Abundance and Peace." The town grew up around the Mufulira Copper Mine in the 1930s, and it also serves as the administrative capital of Mufulira District.

Getting around

Mufulira has no passenger rail, metro or tram network — the only railway line serving the town is a freight-only branch that serves the mine, so don't plan on trains to reach or move around it. There is no airport in Mufulira either. The nearest air access is Ndola (NLA), reached by daily Proflight Zambia flights from Lusaka (LUN) in well under an hour; from Ndola airport a taxi into Mufulira is the standard connection, a drive of roughly three-quarters of an hour. Flying to Ndola and continuing by taxi is the fastest way to arrive, though also the most expensive. Driving from Lusaka covers roughly 240 miles and takes around five and a half hours, making it the cheapest option.

Once you are in town, taxis are the workhorse: they cover the final leg from Kitwe or Ndola, and they are the practical way to get around locally. Mufulira is not directly connected to Lusaka by public transport, so bus travel involves a transfer — commonly a bus from Lusaka to Kitwe followed by a taxi, or a bus to Power Tools Bus Station and then a taxi. Euro-Africa Bus Service runs the Lusaka–Kitwe route several times a day, with an average journey time of around six hours. Expect the bus-and-taxi combination to take the better part of a day, and expect to arrange taxis directly rather than through a ride-hailing app. The town is compact and organised around its mine and district administration, so short trips in the centre are plausibly done on foot, but for anything beyond the immediate area — and certainly for Kitwe, Ndola or the border — road transport by taxi or bus is the realistic choice.

Three days in Mufulira

Day one: Arrive in Mufulira, a town in Zambia's Copperbelt Province, and take your time settling into the rhythm of the place. The name itself speaks of abundance and peace, and that contrast shapes your first impressions. Begin with the Mufulira Copper Mine, the landmark that defines the town and its district. If you have come from Ndola, you may have flown with NLA or Proflight Zambia, or travelled from Lusaka via LUN before flying or driving on. Once you are in Mufulira, keep the day simple and let the town introduce itself.

Day two: Use Mufulira as your base and look outward across the Copperbelt Province. Kitwe is within reach, and buses such as Power Tools Bus Station services, Euro Africa Bus Service, and others make the connection. Expect a straightforward journey rather than a scenic one. Returning to Mufulira in the evening, you have the chance to see how the town slows down, with the mine and the district around it setting the pace.

Day three: Spend your last day in Mufulira itself rather than rushing onward. Revisit the parts of the town that appealed to you, whether around the Mufulira Copper Mine or in the quieter corners of the district. If you are heading back to Ndola or onward to Lusaka, arrange your transport in advance, whether by flying or driving. Three days here is enough to understand Mufulira as a working Copperbelt town rather than a place you pass through.
