Etwatwa

Introduction

Etwatwa, also known as Holfontein, is a township in Ekurhuleni in South Africa's Gauteng province, set roughly 20 km from Benoni and 24 km from Springs. It lies close to the Gauteng–Mpumalanga border to the east, towards Delmas, which is why it is also called the last town.

The township is made up of many sections, among them Etwatwa West, Quantum, Barcelona, Mkgoba, Bester Homes, Etwatwa Ext 7, Citicon, Etwatwa East, Etwatwa Ext 9, Etwatwa Ext 10, and Mandela. Expect a spread-out settlement of distinct neighbourhoods rather than a single centre.

Getting around

Etwatwa is a residential township rather than a tourist city, so getting around means using the same transport residents rely on to reach work, schools, shops and services. There is no metro, tram or light-rail network, and no passenger rail connection reaches the township; a promised link to the Daveyton rail line has not been delivered, so do not plan on taking a train to reach or leave Etwatwa. Formal bus services are limited, and the township's public transport is dominated by minibus taxis. Walking covers short trips within and between sections, and shopping and services are concentrated around local facilities such as the Etwatwa Crossing Mall.

Minibus taxis are your most practical way to travel to and from Etwatwa. A key route runs between the Etwatwa Las Vegas Taxi Rank and Springs, a major economic and transport hub on the East Rand, passing through surrounding townships and suburbs; nearby locations include Etwatwa West Taxi Rank, Duduza Taxi Rank, Kwa-Thema, Selcourt and Geduld. Taxis typically depart when full, so arrive early if you want to avoid a long wait, and build in waiting time. Cash is preferred, so bring small change, as digital payment is not always accepted. Confirm your destination with the driver or conductor before boarding. Walking is realistic for short distances within the township's many sections and to reach local amenities such as schools, clinics, libraries, parks and the mall, but because Etwatwa is spread across distinct sections, longer trips are better made by taxi; walk in daylight and stick to routes you know. If you arrive by air, expect to reach Etwatwa by road, most likely by arranging a private transfer or connecting through a nearby town's taxi ranks.

Three days in Etwatwa

Day one: Start in Etwatwa West, getting your bearings around the Etwatwa West Taxi Rank, where minibus taxis connect the township to the wider East Rand. Wander through the formal parts of Etwatwa and stop at Etwatwa Crossing Mall for supplies and a sense of daily life. In the evening, head toward Daveyton or Benoni if you want a wider choice of places to eat and stay.

Day two: Use the taxis from the rank to explore further afield. Head to Springs to see Selcourt and Geduld, or continue toward Delmas in Mpumalanga if you want a longer trip. Back in Etwatwa, spend the afternoon around Etwatwa East and Etwatwa Ext, and confirm your transport back before it gets late.

Day three: Take a final minibus ride to Duduza Taxi Rank or toward KwaThema to see another part of Ekurhuleni, then return to Etwatwa for a last walk through the neighbourhoods near Bester Homes and Citicon. If you have time, pass through Etwatwa Crossing Mall once more before leaving. Confirm your onward connections to Gauteng and the rest of South Africa before you go.
