Sasolburg

Introduction

Sasolburg is a city in the Free State province of South Africa, sitting in the northern part of the province. It serves as the seat of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, which makes it a natural base for exploring this part of the Free State.

Getting around

Sasolburg is a car-oriented town, and the most predictable way to get around is to drive yourself. Car hire services are available, and a rented car also makes it far easier to reach the wider Vaal Triangle, including the Vaal River and the Vaal Dam area. If you arrive by air, note that the town has no airport of its own; visitors typically land at one of the major Gauteng airports and continue by road, so arranging a car hire at the airport gives you the most flexibility once you arrive. A pre-booked shuttle or private transfer, or a ride-hailing app where available, can also get you door to door.

For local trips, minibus taxis are the most common and most affordable form of public transport, and the mode most residents rely on daily. They run along set routes but can also be flagged down at points along the way, and you should expect to share the vehicle, with departures often waiting until the taxi is reasonably full. Fares are usually paid in cash to the driver or a conductor, so keep small notes and coins on hand, and ask locally which routes serve your destination, since the network is route-based rather than signposted. Buses are limited and mainly useful for travel between Sasolburg and nearby towns and cities rather than for moving between neighbourhoods. Metered taxis exist but are not common, and ride-hailing availability varies, so check the app before relying on it, especially outside peak hours or away from the town centre. There is no metro or tram network, and rail is not practical for getting around. Walking is common for shorter distances within neighbourhoods and business areas, while cycling is possible in some parts of town but may mean sharing the road with vehicles.

Three days in Sasolburg

Day one: Settle into Sasolburg, a town in the Free State within Metsimaholo Local Municipality, and get your bearings on foot. Walking is the easiest way to take in the town's layout before you plan the rest of your stay. In the evening, look ahead to the days out that the Vaal Triangle and the Vaal River put within reach.

Day two: Head for the water. The Vaal River and the Vaal Dam are the area's defining features, and a car makes the trip out and back straightforward. If you would rather not drive, fares on buses and metered taxis cover local journeys, though it pays to confirm the details before you set off.

Day three: Use the last day to look beyond Sasolburg into the wider Vaal Triangle, with Gauteng close by if you are continuing your trip. There is scope to explore at an easy pace before you leave the Free State behind.
