Dhamar
Introduction
Dhamar is a city in south-western Yemen, set at an elevation of around 2,400 metres. At that height, expect thin, cool air and a mountain climate rather than the heat of the coast.
Three days in Dhamar
Day one: Arrive in Dhamar, a city in the Yemeni highlands, and take time to adjust to the altitude and the dry, sunny days that turn cool at night. Start with the old town, where the architecture and street life give you a feel for the city's character. In the afternoon, visit the market area to see local goods and produce, and try a simple Yemeni meal such as saltah or a freshly baked flatbread.
- Old town walk
- Local market
- Yemeni dishes: saltah, flatbread
Day two: Head out early to explore the surrounding countryside, where terraced fields and small villages sit among the mountains. The highland scenery is best seen on foot, so plan a walk that lets you take in the views and the cooler air. Return to Dhamar in the late afternoon and spend the evening at a teahouse or restaurant, sampling honey and raisins, which the region is known for.
- Highland walks
- Terraced fields and villages
- Local honey and raisins
Day three: Use your last day to revisit anything you missed in Dhamar, such as the Great Mosque or the city's older quarters. If time allows, take a short trip to a nearby village to see more of the highland way of life. Before you leave, pick up some local honey or raisins as a reminder of your stay, and enjoy a final meal of Yemeni favourites.
