Tam Ky
Introduction
Tam Kỳ is a ward of Da Nang, Vietnam, formed as part of the city's 2025 reorganization into 94 new wards, communes and special zones. For travellers, that means Tam Kỳ sits within Da Nang's administrative boundaries rather than standing as a separate city.
Before you go
Tam Ky is a linear city, spreading along three major roads that run north-west to south-east, so orienting yourself around those routes will help you plan where to stay and how to get around. It is often passed over by visitors in favour of historic Hoi An or cosmopolitan Da Nang, which means amenities and services are fewer here than in those better-known neighbours. Come expecting a quieter stop and plan accordingly, rather than assuming the range of facilities you would find elsewhere in the region.Getting there
Tam Kỳ is served by its own airport, with Vietnam Airlines offering direct flights to Hanoi and codeshare flights to Ho Chi Minh City. The city is also a major stop on Vietnam's north-south reunification rail line, and all trains running the HCMC–Hanoi and Hanoi–HCMC routes call here. The railway station, Ga Tam Kỳ, sits south-west of the city centre.
By road, a local bus makes frequent runs from Da Nang, possibly via Hoi An, and Tam Kỳ is an inevitable obstacle for virtually every bus moving along Vietnam's North-South Highway 1. There are two major bus stations, one at each entrance and exit to the city, generally serving destinations in their respective directions. Locals often don't know this, though, as they generally stand on the side of the road and wave down the bus they need. Since many vehicles passing through for larger destinations, such as Da Nang to Quy Nhon, often don't stop at the stations, you would be well advised to do as the locals do.
Getting around
Getting around Tam Ky means choosing between local buses, taxis, motorbike taxis, and your own two feet in the compact centre. There is no metro or tram, so plan around road transport and the national rail line. Tam Ky Railway Station sits south-west of the centre and is a stop on the north-south reunification line, with trains calling on the Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City routes; because it lies outside the immediate centre, expect a short taxi or xe om ride to your accommodation. Quang Nam's semi-urban bus network serves the city and surrounds, but routes and timetables are hard to work out, drivers sometimes refuse foreigners making only short trips, and the routes are confusing and often backtrack. Stops are generally well posted, though buses may crawl through the city as drivers pick up more passengers. Metered taxis and xe om are the most predictable way to cover short distances. For longer journeys, Tam Ky sits on the North-South Highway 1, so most long-distance buses on that corridor pass through; there are two major bus stations, one at each entrance and exit to the city, generally serving destinations in their respective directions, though many through-services do not stop at the stations at all. Locals flag down buses from the side of the road, and doing the same is often more reliable. Buses 7 and 8 run roughly hourly to the beach at Tam Thanh. Walking works well in the central area, but for the railway station, the highway bus stations, or the beach, you will want motorised transport. There are no official motorbike rental businesses close to the train station, so look further afield if you want your own wheels.Where to stay
Tam Ky has only a couple of places to sleep, and they sit at opposite ends of the scale. The Tam Thanh Natural Beach Resort, about 700 m south of the main intersection at Ha Thanh (Tam Thanh) beach, occupies 19th-century French resort buildings and offers dorm beds as well as rooms. It is mostly clean, steps from the beach and friendly, though not glamorous, and it usually has a scooter or bicycles to rent or borrow. Do not confuse it with "Tam Thanh Resort," which is at the main intersection.
- Dai Phu Gia Hotel — a big hotel, but rooms are smelly and a bit dirty, with no way of keeping mosquitoes out and patchy Wi-Fi in some rooms.
Food & drink
The source material for Tam Ky's food and drink scene is empty, so there is nothing to describe here. Check back once the guide has been updated with details on where to eat and drink in the city. What to see and do
Tam Ky's main draw is its beach, where you will find few other Western visitors and plenty of fresh seafood. The shoreline at Ha Thanh (Tam Ky) beach is the anchor of a visit here, and it rewards a slow, unhurried pace. Inland from the sand, a large museum sits on nicely maintained grounds. About 2 km north of the main intersection at Ha Thanh beach, Lang Chai Tam Thanh is a fishing village whose homes were decorated with attractive murals through a project promoted by a Portuguese NGO. It costs nothing to wander the village, though you can offer your support by stopping for a snack or paying for secure parking.Three days in Tam Ky
Day one: Arrive in Tam Ky and get your bearings. If you come by train, you will arrive at Tam Ky Railway Station, also known as Ga Tam Ky, on the North South Highway in Quang Nam. Vietnam Airlines flies into Da Nang, Hoi An and Tam Ky, so you can also reach the city by air. Once you are settled, head to Tam Thanh, the beachside community known for its murals, and walk along the sand. Locals gather here in the late afternoon, so the beach is at its liveliest as the day cools.
Day two: Spend the morning at Tam Thanh Natural Beach Resort, where you can swim and relax by the water. The Tam Thanh Resort is another option for a beach day. In the afternoon, take a metered taxi or a local bus to explore more of Tam Ky. The city is small enough to cover on foot, and walking lets you see the everyday life of Quang Nam. If you need to check in with home, Wi-Fi is available at places such as Dai Phu Gia Hotel.
Day three: Take a day trip south to Quy Nhon, or north to Da Nang, Hoi An, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, depending on your onward plans. Buses and trains run along the North South Highway, and Tam Ky Railway Station connects you to the rest of Vietnam. If you have time before you leave, return to Tam Thanh for a last walk on the beach. The Tam Thanh Natural Beach Resort and Ha Thanh are both good spots to end your stay.
