Bac Ninh

Introduction

Bắc Ninh is a centrally-governed city in Vietnam, situated in the Red River Delta. It shares borders with Hanoi, Hải Phòng, Quảng Ninh, Hưng Yên province, Lạng Sơn province, and Thái Nguyên province, placing it within easy reach of several major destinations in the north of the country.

When to go

Bac Ninh has a warm, humid subtropical climate, so what you pack and when you visit depend largely on how you handle heat, rain and the cooler months. Summer is hot and humid and brings the majority of the annual rainfall, meaning frequent rain and sticky conditions; July is the hottest month. If you want to avoid the worst of the heat and wet weather, October stands out as the best time of the year in terms of weather, offering a break from the summer heat and rain.

Winters here are relatively cold and dry by national standards, dry in the first half and more humid in the second, with January the coldest month. Spring is a transition period: April can bring light rains as the season shifts toward the hot, humid summer ahead.

Three days in Bac Ninh

Day one: Base yourself in Bắc Ninh and use it as your introduction to the Red River Delta, the flat, watery landscape that surrounds the city. It sits within easy reach of Hanoi, Hải Phòng, Quảng Ninh, Hưng Yên, Lạng Sơn and Thái Nguyên, so you can arrive without crossing the whole country. Spend the day getting your bearings in Bac Ninh itself, walking its streets and watching how the delta's rhythms shape daily life.

Day two: Give the day to the seasons. Summer, from around July, is hot and humid, so plan slower mornings and shaded afternoons. If you travel in October, you catch the milder, clearer stretch of autumn. Winters, from about January, turn cool and damp, so pack layers. Spring, by April, brings gentler conditions and is a comfortable time to be out and about.

Day three: Use Bac Ninh as a springboard rather than a single stop. The surrounding provinces - Hanoi, Hải Phòng, Quảng Ninh, Hưng Yên, Lạng Sơn and Thái Nguyên - are all within the delta's orbit, so you can shape a final day around whichever direction appeals. Keep the pace easy, let the weather guide you, and treat the city as one part of a wider northern Vietnam route.
