Getting around

Bắc Từ Liêm is well connected to the rest of Hanoi by public transport, with buses and taxis the two modes specifically named as linking the district to the wider city. The practical approach is to combine modes: take the metro or a bus for longer legs along main roads, then a taxi or ride-hailing car or motorbike for the first and last stretch. English is among the languages used in the area, which makes asking for directions or buying tickets more manageable than in some other parts of Vietnam.

Buses are the most widespread form of public transport in the district, with stops concentrated along several key streets. Đường Cầu Diễn, part of the QL.32 highway, is the busiest corridor with the largest number of stops; Đường Tây Tựu and Đường Xuân Phương, both on the ĐT.70 primary road, have a solid spread; Đường Đức Thắng has a handful; and Phố Viên, a local road, has a few stops handy for shorter neighbourhood trips. If you stay near any of these streets, you will usually be within easy walking distance of a stop. Buy tickets on board or via passes, and carry small change in Vietnamese đồng (VND).

Hanoi's climate shapes how much you will want to walk: spring is mild, summer is hot and humid, fall is cooler, and winters are mild. April–June and September–November are the most comfortable periods for walking and waiting at stops.

Three days in Bac Tu Liem

Day one: Base yourself in Bắc Từ Liêm and get your bearings in the wider city of Hanoi. Buses and taxis are the straightforward ways to move around, and if you arrive from Nội Bài International Airport, confirm your onward transport before you set off. Buy a little Vietnamese đồng (VND) so small purchases are easy, and keep the English-language signage in mind as you go. Walking is a good way to settle in, and because daylight saving time is not observed here, plan your outings by the natural rhythm of the day rather than by a clock change.

Day two: Explore the neighbourhoods of the district on foot and by ride. Cầu Diễn, Tây Tựu, Xuân Phương, Thắng and Phố Viên each have their own character, and moving between them by bus or taxi lets you see how the area shifts from one quarter to the next. The QL road is a useful reference point as you travel. Having a rough route in mind helps, and if you want to cover more ground, a ride hailing service or a taxi is the simplest option.

Day three: Use the Metro to connect your time in Bắc Từ Liêm with the rest of Hanoi, and let the season shape your day. April, June, September and November each bring their own feel, so dress for warm and humid conditions or cooler spells depending on when you visit. From Nội Bài International Airport, confirm your departure arrangements in advance, and leave enough time for the journey back.
