Carora
Introduction
Carora, commonly called Carora City, sits in Lara State in Venezuela, on the Morere River where it branches off from the Tocuyo River. It lies roughly 54 miles southwest of Barquisimeto, which makes it a natural stop if you are travelling through this part of western Venezuela.
The city is the main urban centre of its area, and its position on the Morere gives it a riverside setting within the dry Lara landscape. Use Carora as a base for exploring the surrounding region, or as a waypoint between Barquisimeto and points further southwest.
Three days in Carora
Day one: Start in Carora itself, getting your bearings in the streets of this colonial town in Lara State, Venezuela. Take in the calm pace of the centre before heading out to the surrounding countryside, where the Morere River and the Tocuyo River shape the landscape. Keep the day unhurried and let the town's quiet rhythm set your pace.
Day two: Use Carora as your base for exploring the wider area of Lara State. Follow the course of the Morere and Tocuyo rivers, which give the land around the town its character, and spend the afternoon back in Carora City, where the colonial atmosphere rewards a slow wander.
Day three: If you want a change of scene, Barquisimeto is the nearest larger city and makes a natural final stop before you move on. Otherwise, spend a last day in Carora, revisiting the parts of the town and the riverside that appealed to you most.
