Getting around

East Chattanooga is a residential and industrial part of the city, so getting around works best as a mix of modes: CARTA buses for the main legs, your own two feet in the walkable pockets, and a car or ride-hailing app to cover the gaps. CARTA (the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority) runs public transit across the city, Hamilton County, and the surrounding areas. Its fixed-route buses are the main way to reach East Chattanooga without a car, and Route 10C (East Chattanooga–Campbell St.) is the one that runs through this side of town. It links the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Erlanger Medical Center, the Hamilton County Health Department, the Erlanger Community Health Center on Dodson Avenue, Dodson Avenue itself, Campbell Street, Highway 58, and Warner Park — so if your trip involves the hospital, the university, or the Highway 58 corridor, this is the route to look for. Route 10C does not run on Saturdays, Sundays, or major holidays, so plan weekday travel and check the schedule before relying on a weekend bus. Timetables are available in English and Spanish.

CARTA's network reaches well beyond East Chattanooga, with routes to Alton Park, Eastgate/Hamilton Place, East Lake, Avondale/Glenwood, Rossville, Northgate, Golden Gateway, and Enterprise South/Amnicola Highway, plus dedicated shuttles for Downtown, North Shore, and St. Elmo/Incline — useful if you want to connect onward from East Chattanooga. Alongside the fixed routes, CARTA operates paratransit service (CARE-A-VAN), a free all-electric downtown shuttle, parking garages, and Park & Ride lots; the shuttle makes the central city easy to move around, and the lots let you leave a car on the outskirts and continue by bus. Chattanooga has no rail, metro, or tram network, so plan on buses, shuttles, and road transport instead. East Chattanooga is spread out and not a walking-oriented district: walking suits short local trips or reaching a specific destination once you have arrived by bus or car, but not covering the area as a whole. A car-based option is often the simplest way to fill gaps in bus coverage, especially on weekends and holidays when Route 10C does not run. For schedules, passes, and connections, contact CARTA directly.
