Elk Grove
Introduction
Elk Grove sits in Sacramento County, just south of the state capital and within the Sacramento metropolitan area. It is a large city by the standards of the county, and its growth has been rapid in recent decades.
Wineries, wine cellars, and vineyards are part of the city's character, giving visitors a reason to linger beyond a quick pass through the capital region.
Getting there
You can reach Elk Grove by car from Interstate 5, which runs just west of the city, or from CA-99 to the south; either route puts you roughly 16 miles from Sacramento. If you are flying in, Sacramento International Airport lies about 26 miles to the north.Getting around
Elk Grove sits in Sacramento County, just east of Interstate 5 and roughly half an hour by car or public transit from downtown Sacramento. Two highways serve the city: CA-99 runs through the center of town, and I-5 borders the western edge, connecting Elk Grove with Sacramento, Stockton, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Most visitors arrive with a vehicle or arrange ground transport in advance, and driving remains the most practical way to get around. Street parking is free throughout the city, with a few clearly marked paid lots and spaces in Old Town. Rental agencies including Enterprise, Hertz, and Budget have locations just off CA-99. From the north or south via I-5, take Exit 506 (Elk Grove Blvd); from the south via CA-99, take Exit 286 (Elk Grove Blvd).
Public transit within the city is bus-based, provided by the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT), which took over what was formerly known as Elk Grove Transit Services (eTran). The network includes commuter and local bus routes plus e-van and ADA service within the city limits, with multiple stops around town; commuter routes are oriented toward Sacramento, so they are most useful if you are heading into the city or back out again. Passes can be purchased online, and you can track buses and plan trips using SacRT apps and resources. Elk Grove has no rail, metro, or tram network of its own, so plan to connect through Sacramento if your trip depends on trains or light rail. Ride-hailing is a straightforward option: Uber, Lyft, and Wingz all operate in the area, and local taxi service is available as well — worth setting up before you arrive, especially for evenings or trips that do not line up with bus schedules. Walking suits specific districts rather than crossing town; Old Town, near the CA-99 exit, is the most walkable pocket. Cycling is a stronger option for covering distance, with an extensive network of parks, multi-use trails, and protected bike lanes, plus a dedicated bridge spanning CA-99 for cyclists, runners, and pedestrians that links the east and west sides of the city. The City of Elk Grove publishes a map of area bike routes.
Where to stay
Elk Grove's lodging is concentrated along two commercial corridors, so your choice of address largely determines what is within easy reach. On Maritime Drive, a Holiday Inn Express offers a complimentary hot breakfast along with a fitness center and an outdoor pool and whirlpool. A second Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites sits on West Stockton Boulevard, where the amenities include complimentary breakfast and wi-fi.
Both properties are chain hotels with standard check-in and check-out times, so plan your arrival accordingly. If you want pool time or a workout between outings, the Maritime Drive location is the one to book; if you simply need a convenient base with breakfast and internet included, either works.
Food & drink
For a sit-down meal, Elk Grove offers a handful of distinct options. Boulevard Bistro serves California-inspired dishes and wine in a bungalow dating to the early 20th century, and its atmosphere suits a date night rather than a quick stop. Kotteri Ramen Bar is a Japanese restaurant known for its ramen and other items such as squid legs, with a notably good broth; the black tonkatsu ramen is worth ordering. Journey to the Dumpling is a relaxed Chinese restaurant that serves alcohol alongside dumpling soups and noodle dishes in large portions. For Southern comfort food, Sarom's Southern Kitchen draws people for its sweet potato pie and also offers ribs, chicken and waffles, and grits. When you want a drink, Babe's Lounge is a lounge with a good whiskey selection and bottomless mimosas on Sundays. Hay Tone's Hangout is a casual dive bar with a pool area and a selection of beers. What to see and do
Elk Grove rewards a slow look at its past. The Elk Grove Historical Society runs a small museum with local history and holiday events such as Halloween and Christmas, and it's a good place to take children. South of the main road in the Elk Grove Cosumnes-Cemetery District, the grave of Elitha Cumi Donner Wilder marks a California historical landmark commemorating a survivor of the Donner Party. Another state landmark, the site of the first county free library branch in California, sits on Elk Grove Boulevard. If a garden is on your way, the Community Rose Garden in Dick Lichtenburger Park is a pleasant spot to stop and relax, and the surrounding park has places to walk. For something more active, you can sign up for a painting class at Pinot's Palette, an art studio where you paint and enjoy a drink; the bartenders make good recommendations. Exit Strategy Games offers an escape room that works well for families or parties. Emerald Lakes Golf Course is a well-maintained nine-hole course that also offers lessons.Three days in Elk Grove
Day one: Arrive at Sacramento International Airport and make your way south into Sacramento County. If you are driving, take Interstate 5 or CA-99 toward Elk Grove; rental cars are available from Enterprise, Hertz and Budget. From the airport you can also arrange a ride with Uber, Lyft or Wingz. Once settled, spend the afternoon getting your bearings in Old Town, where you can walk the streets and take in the historic character of the district. In the evening, choose a base such as the Holiday Inn Express on Maritime Drive, which puts you within easy reach of the city's dining and shopping.
Day two: Devote the day to the wineries that surround Elk Grove. The region's vineyards make an easy day trip by car, and the flat terrain also suits cycling if you prefer to travel on two wheels. Public transport is limited in the countryside, so plan your route in advance; Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) and Elk Grove Transit Services cover much of the urban area, with ADA-accessible vehicles and passes available. Return to the city in the evening for dinner.
Day three: Use your final day to explore further afield. Sacramento is a short drive north, and Stockton lies to the south, while the San Francisco Bay Area is reachable for a longer excursion. If you would rather stay local, spend a leisurely morning walking or cycling through Elk Grove's neighbourhoods before heading back to Sacramento International Airport. Most visitors find three days enough to see the wineries, Old Town and the surrounding Delta region at a relaxed pace.
