Njeru
Introduction
Njeru is a town in Buikwe District, in Uganda's Central Region, and it is the largest town in the district. It is mainly a residential town, so expect a place whose daily rhythm is shaped by the people who live there rather than by tourism.
What sets Njeru apart is its industrial base. The town hosts East African Packaging Solutions Limited, which manufactures paper packaging supplies, Nile Breweries Limited, a subsidiary of AB InBev, and Nyanza Textile Industries Limited (Nytil), a textile manufacturer. These works give the town its working character and are the main draw for anyone visiting.
Three days in Njeru
Day one: Start in Njeru, in Buikwe District, in Uganda's Central Region. Get your bearings in the town itself before turning to the industrial side of things, where East African Packaging Solutions and Nile Breweries Limited, part of AB InBev, are based.
Day two: Give the day over to the manufacturing that shapes the town. Nyanza Textile Industries Limited, better known as Nytil, is the other major name here, so plan your time around seeing how these operations sit within Njeru and the wider Buikwe District.
Day three: Use your last day to pull the threads together. It, What, The and These are the questions worth asking as you leave: how a town in the Central Region of Uganda came to be defined by industry, and what that means for the Njeru you have walked through.
