Rivne
Introduction
Rivne is a city in western Ukraine, and it serves as the administrative center of both Rivne Oblast and the Rivne Raion within that oblast. Your travels here place you in a regional hub rather than a tourist trail town, so expect a working Ukrainian city going about its daily business.
Before you go
Before you go, plan to confirm practical details such as transport, accommodation and opening arrangements through other up-to-date sources, since none are covered here.
- Expect a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, and pack accordingly.
- Bring cash in the local currency, as card acceptance can be uneven outside the centre.
- Check current travel advice for the region before booking anything.
Getting there
Ukraine's airspace is closed to civil aviation, so you cannot fly into Rivne. The practical approach is by train or bus from elsewhere in the country.
- By train: Rivne Railway Station sits on Maidan Pryvokzalnyi. Services run to Kovel several times a day, to Lviv two to three times daily, and to Lutsk three times a day, with the last departure around midday. Suburban rail also runs toward Lviv. Advance tickets can be bought at a separate ticket office on Vul. Kikvidze.
- By bus: Rivne Bus Terminal is on Vul. Kyivska, about 3 km east of the centre. Chayka Bus Station is on Vul. Haharina, roughly 3 km northeast. Zaliznychna Bus Station, on Vul. Kikvidze near the train station, handles destinations within Rivne Oblast only.
Getting around
Rivne has no metro or tram, so you get around by bus, trolleybus, minibus (marshrutka), taxi, ride-hailing app, kick scooter, or on foot. The centre is compact enough that walking works well for short hops, especially if you stay near the middle of town. For longer crossings, or when you are moving between the railway station and the main bus terminal with luggage, take a taxi instead of walking — the two are in different parts of the city.
Public transport is convenient and fares are paid per ride, with trolleybuses costing less than buses and minibuses; trolleybus fares are lowest with a transport card, a little higher with a bank card or mobile wallet, and highest in cash, and student and school discounts are available. Carry small cash, since card acceptance and network stability can vary, and treat any specific price as subject to change. Schedules are published on the official city website and on rozklad.in.ua (in Ukrainian), and you can also check information on DozoR (in Ukrainian), EasyWay, and Google Maps. Taxi is the easiest way to get around and is the recommended option for your first transfer from the railway station or the Kyivska Street bus terminal unless your lodging is very close and your luggage is light. Ride-hailing apps operating in the city include Bolt, Uklon, Uber, Opti, and OnTaxi, alongside local dispatch services and companies such as Shark; compare apps on price and wait time, and note that availability can change during curfew or air alerts. Kick scooters are available through operators such as JET.UA and are a fun way to shorten a trip around town.
Where to stay
Rivne's accommodation is spread between the centre and the surrounding suburbs, with the largest cluster lying to the west along the Korostyshiv-Rivne road near the airport. In the city centre you can base yourself at the Ukraine on Soborna Street, the Myr on Mitskevycha Street, or the Optima Rivne on Slovatskogo Street. Slightly further out, the Marlen on Hrushevskoho Akademika and the Feniks on Vydumka Street sit within a short distance of the middle, while the Turyst on Kyivska Street places you near the Andreievskyi market to the east.
If you prefer to stay on the edge of town, the western Velyka Omeliana suburb holds the Sofyia, the Khutir and an auto camping with a restaurant, all convenient to the airport. South of the centre in the Kolodenka suburb is the Ayvenho hotel and restaurant complex. Also outside the core are the Okolytsia motel to the north, the V12 motel and cafe on Soborna Street, the Zolote Runo on Telihy Oleny Street, and the Optima Collection Bergshloss Rivne on Petra Mohyly Street. Room counts vary from small properties of around ten rooms to larger ones with several dozen, and several hotels have their own restaurants.
Food & drink
For quick, inexpensive meals, you can head to the fast-food spots around town: Bistro on Kyivs'ka, Puzata khata in the Metro shopping centre on Makarova, or Dva Husia on Vul. Kavkazka. These are straightforward places to grab a bite without lingering. If you'd rather sit over coffee and something sweet, Rivne's cafes cover that ground. Trasa-60 on Vul. Volodymyra Kniazia doubles as fast food, while Melin on Vul. Peresopnyts'ka and Ivita on Vul. Soborna are confectionery-cafes where you can count on pastries. Lanch on Vul. Krushelnytskoi Solomii is another cafe-bistro option, and the Salvador Dali gallery-cafe on Vul. Polubotka Hetmana pairs art with your coffee. What to see and do
Rivne's religious architecture spans centuries and styles. The Cathedral of the Resurrection, built in the 1890s and donated by Emperor Alexander III, is best known for its three-tiered gilded iconostasis by the Kyiv artist Alexander Ivanovich. Nearby on the same street stands the Roman Catholic Church of Sts. Peter and Paul. The Cathedral of the Virgin Protectress, at the cemetery gate, is among the largest and tallest churches in Ukraine, its great central dome symbolising Christ with smaller domes for the apostles. Older still is the Church of the Holy Dormition, dating to 1756, while the wooden church of All Saints of Volhynia is described as the oldest building in town. The Roman Catholic church of St. Antony, built in 1899, now serves as a hall of chamber and organ music. For museums, the Rivne Regional Museum is the city's most important, housed in a 19th-century building in the style of provincial classicism, with collections covering the material and spiritual culture of the region. The Literary Museum of Ulas Samchuk and Museum of Amber occupy halls of the House of Scientists, where you'll also find the Museum of the Ukrainian Art. The Zuza art gallery regularly hosts workshops, such as making decorative vases and plates from ordinary glass bottles. Elsewhere there's a W.W.II. Museum and a showroom of the regional society of artists. For green space, head to the Taras Shevchenko Park, a landscape park-monument and the largest in the city, with some 160 species of trees and shrubs and trees 150–200 years old, plus sports and concert halls and cafes. The Hydropark offers a lakeshore beach, and the city zoo lies east of the centre. In the evening, the Rivne regional musical-drama theatre and the puppet theatre stage performances, while the Khimik Exhibition Centre and Concert Hall hosts larger events. Further afield, the Tunnel of Love — a stretch of industrial railway arched over by green trees — begins at Klevan station and runs toward Orzhiv. When to go
Rivne has a moderate continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and warm summers. Snow cover typically lasts from November until March, so plan for cold, snowy conditions if you travel in that window; January and February are the driest months of the year. Summer is warm, but June and July are the wettest months, so expect rain during this period and pack accordingly.Three days in Rivne
Day one: Arrive at Rivne Railway Station on Maidan Pryvokzalnyi, where services connect onward to Kovel, Lviv and Lutsk. Suburban trains are worth checking in advance. From Vul. Kikvidze you can reach Rivne Bus Terminal, and from Kyivska the Chayka Bus Station and Haharina the Zaliznychna Bus Station. For public transport, carry the DozoR and EasyWay apps alongside Google Maps. Taxis along Kyivska Street are easy to ride through Bolt, Uklon and Uber.
Day two: Use the day to get your bearings in Rivne itself, moving between the station area and the bus terminals as your base for exploring Rivne Raion and the wider Rivne Oblast. Expect Ukrainian signage and timetables, so check schedules before you set out. Bring a charged phone for the transport apps, and keep some flexibility for connections toward Lutsk, Kovel or Lviv if you decide to range further.
Day three: Before you leave, confirm your onward departure from whichever terminal suits your route - Rivne Railway Station, Rivne Bus Terminal, Chayka Bus Station or Zaliznychna Bus Station. Advance booking helps on the longer services. Carry your tickets and check the apps once more for any changes, then head out of Rivne by rail or road.
