Getting around

Desna is not a single city with an urban transit network, so getting around depends on which place of that name you are heading for. The only transport detail the source material supports concerns the Desna-Stara Huta National Nature Park in Sumy Oblast. To reach the park, take a train from Kyiv to Zernove station, or a bus from Sumy or Shostka to Seredyna-Buda; you can also drive, and the source gives driving distances rather than routes.

Because parts of the park lie in border sections, check with the park administration about restrictions before you travel. No metro, tram, bus, taxi or airport transfer information is available for any of the settlements named Desna, so plan your onward movement around the train, bus and car access described above.

Three days in Desna

Day one: Start in Desna itself, getting your bearings in the town before heading out towards the surrounding countryside. Use the day to settle in and explore the local area at an easy pace, saving longer excursions for later.

Day two: Head into Stara Huta National Nature Park, the woodland and wetland landscape that defines this part of Sumy Oblast. Spend your time walking the park and taking in the scenery before returning to Desna for the evening.

Day three: Take a longer trip out to settlements such as Zernove, Shostka, Seredyna or Buda, or travel further afield towards Sumy or Kyiv if you are continuing your journey. Keep the day flexible so you can enjoy the region at your own pace before departing.
