Makumbako

Getting around

Makumbako sits at the crossroads of the A104 and B4 roads, so everything about getting around here revolves around the road network. No rail, metro or tram service reaches the town, and there are no ride-hailing apps or private-hire services to book, so plan on road-based transport for both local trips and onward travel. Buses and shared taxis are the common, affordable options; shared taxis typically fill up with several passengers heading the same way. The town is compact enough that walking works well for short distances in the centre and for browsing the local markets, but use shared transport for longer or cross-town journeys.

Three days in Makumbako

Day one: Start in Makumbako itself, getting your bearings in the town before planning onward travel. Carry Tanzanian shillings (TZS) for everyday needs, and use Swahili or English to ask your way around. Expect buses to be the main way in and out of town, with connections toward Njombe, Iringa and Mbeya.

Day two: Use Makumbako as your base for a day trip toward Njombe, travelling by bus. Check departure times early, since services can fill up. Return to Makumbako in the evening.

Day three: Head toward Iringa or Mbeya by bus, depending on which direction suits your onward plans. Expect long journeys, so start early and carry what you need. If your travels bring you back through Makumbako in April, June, September or November, check conditions before setting out.
