Kahama
Introduction
Kahama is a town in north-western Tanzania, and it serves as the headquarters of Kahama Urban District. If your travels take you through this part of the country, the town is the administrative centre for the surrounding urban district.
Getting around
Kahama has no rail, metro or tram network, and no formal urban transit system. Long-distance buses are the main way in and out, with regular services connecting the town to Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha and other key cities; the Dar es Salaam run is a long haul of roughly eight to ten hours, while Mwanza is a few hours away by road. Book your ticket ahead during peak seasons. Within town and the surrounding area, local minibuses and shared taxis handle short trips — affordable and used mainly by residents, so a good budget option if you're comfortable with local-style transport. For short hops around the centre, walking combined with a boda-boda or shared taxi covers most needs.
Taxis exist but are less widely available than in larger Tanzanian cities, generally found near the town centre and around major hotels; arrange one in advance or through your accommodation or guide rather than expecting to flag one down easily. Boda-bodas, or motorcycle taxis, are common for short distances and useful for narrow roads and places other vehicles don't reach — insist on a helmet and choose a reputable driver. Several local agencies rent cars, including vehicles with drivers, a sensible choice if you want flexibility for day trips or onward travel. Kahama has no major airport and no direct commercial flights; the nearest options are Mwanza or Shinyanga, each within a few hours' drive, served by domestic airlines including Precision Air and Air Tanzania, with the final leg completed by road. Roads from Mwanza, Shinyanga and Dar es Salaam are generally fair to good, but the main highway has uneven stretches, potholes and dirt sections, and conditions worsen in the rainy season, so check before you travel. If you're heading onward to the Serengeti or Lake Victoria, treat Kahama as a comfortable stopover and confirm your onward transport before arriving.
