Mbeya
Introduction
Located in the southwest of Tanzania, Mbeya serves as the capital of the surrounding rural Mbeya region. You will find yourself in a significant urban center within this part of Africa.
Before you go
If you are traveling through the region by vehicle, you can find a reputable garage located just outside of town on the Zambia road at Mbalizi. Situated behind the hospital at the Mbalizi vocational training centre and near Utengule Coffee lodge, this location is known for having skilled mechanics.
Be vigilant regarding bus ticket scams occurring in Mbeya. Scammers may present you with official-looking price sheets and documentation while pretending to sell tickets to various cities in Malawi. They may even perform phone calls to confirm availability; however, no buses travel directly from Mbeya to Malawi. These vehicles only reach the border town of Kyela, and those who fall for these scams are often left at the border without a connecting bus.
Getting there
You can reach the region by air via Songwe Airport, located off the A104 trunk road between Mbalizi and Songwe. Flights connect this destination to Dar es Salaam. Alternatively, you can travel by bus from Dar es Salaam or Iringa, with several departures available daily. From Mbeya, buses continue toward Sumbawanga, where connections are available for onward travel to Mpanda and Kigoma.
Rail travel offers a connection between Dar Es Salaam and Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia via Mbeya, featuring both express and regular weekly services. For regional travel, minibuses and coasters run frequently toward the Malawian border at Kyela and the Zambian border at Tunduma.
Getting around
Navigating the compact city center is straightforward, but you should opt for taxis if you need to reach the train and bus stations or if you are traveling after dark. While dalla-dallas also ply the roads, these vehicles can be difficult to navigate when you are carrying luggage.
Where to stay
You can find various accommodations depending on your proximity to transport hubs or the city center. Guesthouses located across from the bus station offer convenience if you plan to travel toward Malawi the following day. For a stay in the town center, options provide clean rooms with nearby dining at a corner. If you prefer larger rooms with beds equipped with nets and private bathrooms, you can find accommodations situated a short walk from the center.
Other lodging choices include:
- Rooms across the main street from the bus station featuring clean accommodations with or without bathrooms.
- A location behind a basketball court offering single or double rooms with private bathrooms.
- A well-maintained and decorated residence situated just down the hill from the city center, which features spacious rooms and a basement restaurant serving Indian cuisine.
Food & drink
You can enjoy a wide variety of international and local flavors throughout the city. Choose from Indian, Continental, Chinese, or Tanzanian dishes, including flavorful curries at Mbeya Hotel Limited. For those seeking specific favorites, Metro Cuisine serves pizza and burgers, while Hill View Hotel offers a range of meals in a slower-paced dining environment. If you prefer a bakery visit, Royal Oven provides fresh baked goods. You can also find local staples like mtori banana stew with chapati at the Continental hotel.
The local drinking scene offers diverse atmospheres depending on your preference:
- Shakesbeer's Garden provides a social atmosphere for people-watching in the Sae neighborhood.
- Mbeya Golden City Hotel is a suitable spot for special occasions or watching televised events.
- E Point serves as an energetic late-night destination for dancing.

What to see and do
Explore the natural wonders surrounding Mbeya, starting with a visit to Lake Ngozi, a lush crater lake. For a unique geological site, travel southwest to see the Mbozi Meteorite, one of the largest meteorites in the world. You can also venture into Kitulo National Park, known as the "Serengeti of Flowers" or "Bustani ya Mungu," where you can view various flowers including orchids, geraniums, proteas, and lobelias. The park's southwest slope features the Livingstone Forest, home to unique primate, bushbaby, and antelope species. If you prefer water features, visit the Malamba waterfalls in the Rungwe District, where you can combine your trip with nearby sites like God's Bridge, the Cooking Pot, and Kisiba Campsite.
Experience the outdoors by hiking toward Loleza Peak or Mbeya Peak. You should hire an experienced guide for these hikes, who can be found through local travel agencies or hotels in town. For a different experience on the mainland, head to Matema Public Beach to enjoy beautiful views and a pleasant beach atmosphere.
When to go
You can experience Mbeya's subtropical highland climate across two distinct seasons. During the wet season from December to April, you will encounter heavy rainfall that keeps the rich volcanic soils lush and green. While the abundant moisture creates a vibrant landscape, these conditions may affect your travel plans.
Alternatively, you can visit during the dry and cold season for clearer conditions ideal for mountain activities and outdoor exploration. During this period, you should prepare for significant temperature shifts between the chilly highland mornings and the warmer lowland afternoons.
Three days in Mbeya
Day one, you can begin your journey by exploring the local area and settling into your accommodations. You might choose to stay in guesthouses where you can find rooms that provide a comfortable base as you navigate the surroundings.
Day two, you can focus on the local flavors of the region. You can enjoy a cup of Utengule Coffee while taking in the atmosphere of the neighborhood.
Day three, you can consider your next destination if you choose to travel further. You have options for rail or flights to reach other nearby locations such as Iringa, Sumbawanga, Mpanda, or Kigoma.
