Tarime
Introduction
Tarime is a large town in the Mara Region of northwestern Tanzania and serves as the capital of Tarime District. It sits close to the Kenyan border, with the main Tanzania–Kenya crossing at Sirari less than 20km away, reached by following the paved trunk road T4.
Getting around
Tarime is compact and practical rather than sprawling, so walking is the simplest way to cover the town centre and its immediate wards, including Bomani, Nyamisangura, Sabasaba, Nkende, Nyandoto, Kenyamanyori, Turwa and Kentare. If you base yourself centrally, you can reach local shopping, meals and nearby services on foot, and for short hops within town walking is often the more practical choice.
For longer journeys, road-based transport is what you plan around. Long-distance buses are the primary documented form of public transport, and BlueStar Bus runs between Dar es Salaam and Tarime in a single Standard class, with toilets on board but no Wi-Fi; e-tickets are accepted, so there is no need to print your booking. Book ahead if you are travelling around a fixed date, and confirm departure times and pickup points directly with the operator before you travel. There is no rail, metro or tram network documented for Tarime, and no taxi companies or ride-hailing services are described, so if you need a private vehicle, arrange it through your accommodation or a local contact and agree on the fare before you set off. Tarime is not documented as having its own airport, so plan to arrive overland, most likely by long-distance bus from Dar es Salaam or by crossing from Kenya through the nearby Sirari border post on the paved trunk road T4.
Three days in Tarime
Day one: Start in Tarime town, the administrative centre of Tarime District in the Mara Region of Tanzania, and use it as your base for the days ahead. Wander through the town centre and get a feel for the place before heading out to nearby Bomani and Nyamisangura, both within easy reach. If you need to sort out onward travel, look into the BlueStar Bus connection towards Dar es Salaam, and check whether your accommodation offers Wi-Fi before you settle in for the night.
Day two: Head for Sirari, on the Kenyan border, where you can watch the bustle of cross-border traffic and trade. Continue on to Sabasaba and Nkende to see more of the district's rural life and scenery. Long days of moving between villages are best broken up with rests, so plan your stops and book your transport back to Tarime in advance.
Day three: Spend your final day exploring the smaller settlements around the district, such as Nyandoto, Kenyamanyori, Turwa and Kentare. Take your time and enjoy the pace of these places before returning to Tarime. For your onward journey, the Standard and BlueStar Bus services are worth checking, and it is wise to book ahead if you are travelling on towards Dar es Salaam or into Kenya.
