Fengshan

Introduction

Fongshan District sits in southern Kaohsiung and serves as one of the city's administrative centres. It also acts as a link between Pingtung City and Kaohsiung, a role that has shaped its growth over the years.

The district is home to three military units: the Republic of China Military Academy, the R.O.C. Army Infantry School, and Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School. The academy and the infantry school were re-established here in 1950 after coming to Taiwan from mainland China, while the preparatory school was founded in 1976. These units once drove the local economy, though their influence has gradually lessened as Fongshan's position as a connection point between the two cities has come to the fore.

Three days in Fengshan

Day one: Start in Fongshan District, the heart of your visit. Walk the streets of this part of Kaohsiung and get your bearings. The district is home to the Republic of China Military Academy, the Army Infantry School, and the Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School, so military history runs through the area. Take your time and let the character of Fongshan settle in.

Day two: Continue exploring Fongshan District. These institutions - the Republic of China Military Academy, the Army Infantry School, and the Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School - give the district much of its identity. Spend the day moving between them and the surrounding streets, noticing how the military presence shapes daily life here.

Day three: Use your last day to see how Fongshan sits within the wider region. It is part of Kaohsiung, and nearby is Pingtung City, so you can round off your trip by understanding Fongshan's place between these two. Return to the parts of the district you liked most before you leave.
