El Mourouj

Introduction

El Mourouj is a town and commune in the southern suburbs of Tunis, within the Ben Arous Governorate. It became a commune in 1991 and is the seat of the El Mourouj Delegation, which is divided into five districts. The delegation is split from north to south by its main axis, the Avenue des Martyrs. One exception is worth noting for orientation: El Mourouj 2 belongs to the Tunis Governorate rather than Ben Arous.

For a visitor, El Mourouj works as a suburban base on the southern edge of the capital rather than a sightseeing destination in its own right. The Avenue des Martyrs is the spine of the area, dividing the districts and serving as the main reference point for getting around.

Three days in El Mourouj

Day one: Start by getting your bearings in El Mourouj, a town in Ben Arous Governorate within the El Mourouj Delegation. Walk the Avenue and take in the everyday rhythm of the streets before heading into Tunis, the capital in neighbouring Tunis Governorate, to see how the suburb connects to the wider city.

Day two: Give the day to Tunis itself, using El Mourouj as your base. The contrast between the town and the capital is the point of the trip, so move between the two at an easy pace rather than rushing.

Day three: Stay closer to El Mourouj and Ben Arous, following the Avenue and the local streets at a slower rhythm. Use the time to revisit whatever you liked most on the first two days before you leave.
