Nakhon Sawan
Introduction
You can explore the "Heavenly City" located in the northern reaches of Thailand. Situated a significant distance from Bangkok, this provincial capital offers you an opportunity to experience its unique atmosphere across various local districts.
Before you go
Prepare for a journey into a region with deep historical roots, where records of its importance to river traffic date back to the Sukhothai period. You can explore an area that once served as a strategic outpost near the frontier between the Sukhothai and Lavo Kingdoms.
Because this town sees few tourists, you should be aware that English is not widely spoken throughout the area.
Getting there
You can reach Nakhon Sawan from Bangkok by taking a mini-bus from Victory Monument, which travels toward the Big C supermarket. Alternatively, several air-conditioned buses depart daily from the Northern Bus Terminal at Mo Chit. If you are traveling from Lampang, regular bus services are also available.
The city is situated on the Northern Line, which connects Bangkok to Chiang Mai. You can board a train from either terminus, with multiple daily departures. Upon arriving at the station located outside of town, you can take a tuk-tuk for the remaining journey into the city center.
Getting around
You can navigate the city using songthaews, which are plentiful during the day. If you prefer a tuk-tuk, you will find them waiting primarily at the bus station and Big C.
For a faster way to travel, motorcycle taxis are available throughout the area; these drivers are known for being knowledgeable and quick.
Where to stay
You can choose from several accommodations depending on your proximity to local transport hubs. If you arrive by bus, Pimarn is located just across the road from the terminal and serves as a convenient walking distance option. This hotel provides air conditioning, television, hot water, and an included breakfast. Nearby, you can find Pimarn 2.
Other options include Asia Nakhonsawan Hotel, which offers a pleasant stay with Wi-Fi and a buffet breakfast. For those seeking clean and spacious rooms with reliable Wi-Fi, P.A. Mansion Hotel on Sawanvitee Road provides both fan and air-conditioned accommodations.
Food & drink
You can find various street stalls located near the bus station offering affordable local meals and beer. For more variety, you can explore the small restaurants located within the Big C or visit a nearby convenience store.
If you prefer a sit-down breakfast or bakery items, Thong Bai Bakery is situated on Sawanvitee Road. You can also experience the local atmosphere at the night market located by the Ping River near its confluence with the Nan river.
What to see and do
You can visit the Nakhon Sawan Tower, a large landmark of modern Nakhon Sawan situated on a hill where you can also explore Wat Kiriwong. Nearby, you can witness the point where the Ping and Nan rivers merge to form the Chao Phraya River. For a different experience outside of town, travel northeast to the Bueng Boraphet Aquarium.
Explore local landmarks including:
- Nakhon Sawan Municipalities Park
- Wat Nakhon Sawan Phra Aram Luang
- The Pak Nam Pho tradition festival
