Toa Payoh New Town
Introduction
Toa Payoh is a residential town and planning area in the northern part of Singapore's Central Region. The wider planning area borders Bishan and Serangoon to the north, the Central Water Catchment to the northwest, Novena to the west, Kallang to the south, Geylang to the southeast and Hougang to the east, and it takes in estates such as Potong Pasir and Bidadari.
Toa Payoh New Town itself sits in the western portion of that planning area, so treat it as one part of a larger district rather than the whole of it. Its neighbours give you a sense of where you are: Bishan and Serangoon above, Novena to the west, and Kallang and Geylang toward the south and southeast.
Getting around
You can base yourself in Toa Payoh and reach most of Singapore by train or bus, and cover the town itself largely on foot. Two MRT stations serve the town: Toa Payoh, the more central of the two for sightseeing and shopping, sits directly beneath the HDB Hub at the town centre and is physically integrated with the bus interchange built on top of it, so you can step off a train and into an air-conditioned bus interchange without going outdoors. Braddell station serves the northern part of town and is a useful alternative if you are staying nearer that side. Note that the Toa Payoh planning area is larger than the new town and includes estates such as Potong Pasir and Bidadari, so some places carrying the "Toa Payoh" name are not within walking distance of these two stations.
The Toa Payoh Bus Interchange at the town centre is the bus hub, with trunk services heading across Singapore and feeder services — 230M, 231, 232, 235 and 238 — looping through the neighbourhoods for short local hops. Berths are labelled with an "A" or "B" prefix depending on type and sit in different parts of the interchange, so check the berth letter as well as the bus number; enhancement works mean berths are being closed and reassigned in phases, so follow on-site signage rather than a printed guide. For fares and transit cards, use the SimplyGo Ticket Office and top-up kiosks, or the Passenger Service Offices for directions. Taxis and ride-hailing fill the gaps for late nights, heavy bags or destinations off the main routes, with the town centre around the HDB Hub and bus interchange the easiest landmark to give a driver. On foot, the town centre is compact and several landmarks — HDB Hub, Ci Ern Ge Temple, Toa Payoh Town Park and the Toa Payoh Sensory Park along Lorong 5 — are within easy walking distance of each other. If navigating by address, expect Malay street prefixes such as "Jalan" and "Lorong" rather than English terms.
