Hougang New Town
Introduction
Hougang, also known as Aukang, is a mature residential town in Singapore's North-East Region. It is a planning area bordered by Sengkang to the north, Geylang to the south, Bedok to the southeast, Toa Payoh to the southwest, Serangoon to the west and Paya Lebar to the east, which makes it easy to place within the wider eastern half of the island.
As the largest housing estate in Singapore by land area, Hougang is above all a place where people live, so expect the rhythms of a settled residential town rather than a purpose-built tourist district. Its neighbours give you a sense of the surrounding geography: Sengkang and Serangoon lie to the north and west, while Geylang, Paya Lebar and Bedok stretch away to the south and east.
Three days in Hougang New Town
Day one: Start by getting your bearings in Hougang itself, a mature housing estate in the North-East Region of Singapore. The town is also known by its Teochew name, Aukang, a reminder of the community that shaped it. Wander the neighbourhood centres and markets to see how daily life unfolds in a heartland town, then use Hougang as your base for the days ahead.
Day two: Head out to nearby towns to compare their characters. Sengkang sits close by and shows a newer face of the region, while Serangoon and Toa Payoh offer long-established estates with their own market and food cultures. If you want livelier streets, Geylang and Paya Lebar are within reach, each with a distinct atmosphere of shophouses, food and evening activity.
Day three: Round off your time in the East Region with a slower day. Bedok gives you another side of eastern Singapore, with its markets and neighbourhood life. Return to Hougang in the evening, when the town's eating places and common spaces fill up, and you can end your three days where you started, among the everyday rhythms of a Singapore heartland town.
