Bukit Merah Estate

Introduction

Bukit Merah, also called Redhill, is a planning area and new town in the southernmost part of Singapore's Central Region. It borders Tanglin to the north, Queenstown to the west, and the Downtown Core, Outram and Singapore River planning areas to the east, and it shares a maritime boundary with the Southern Islands to the south.

Its southern edge makes it a practical base for reaching Sentosa Island, which is linked to Bukit Merah via Sentosa Gateway, Sentosa Broadwalk, Sentosa Express and the Cable Car.

Getting around

Bukit Merah sits close to the city centre and is well connected by rail, bus, taxi and ride-hailing, so you can base yourself here and reach most of the island without a car. The MRT is your default: the planning area is served by stations on the East West Line, Circle Line, North East Line and Thomson-East Coast Line. Outram Park is the major interchange where the East West, North East and Thomson-East Coast lines meet, so if you are changing lines this is likely where you will do it. HarbourFront interchanges between the North East and Circle lines, is the southern terminus of the North East Line, and is the station to use for onward travel to Sentosa. Tiong Bahru and Redhill sit on the East West Line, while Labrador Park, Telok Blangah, Keppel and Cantonment are Circle Line stations and Havelock is on the Thomson-East Coast Line. Pay by tapping a stored-value fare card or contactless bank card in and out at the station gates; the SimplyGo Ticket Office and top-up kiosks at Bukit Merah Bus Interchange are useful if you need to sort out a card while in the area.

Buses fill in where the rail does not reach directly. Bukit Merah Bus Interchange, at Bukit Merah Town Centre on Bukit Merah Central, is the local hub and one of the few interchanges in Singapore not connected to an MRT station, so you will need to walk or take a connecting service to reach the network. Service 132 links it to Redhill MRT station, while services 5, 16 and 851 connect to Tiong Bahru MRT station for the East West Line. Other routes run across the island, and service 123 goes to Beach Station on Sentosa. HarbourFront Bus Interchange serves the southern part of the estate, and Kampong Bahru Bus Terminal is along Spooner Road near the Singapore General Hospital. Taxis and ride-hailing are straightforward, especially for awkward trips or late nights, with the interchanges and MRT stations the obvious landmarks for a pickup point. Much of the area is compact enough to walk — Tiong Bahru, the town centre around Bukit Merah Central, and the southern parks — but the terrain is not uniformly flat, so expect slopes and steps, particularly around Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill.

Three days in Bukit Merah Estate

Day one: Start by getting your bearings in Bukit Merah, a residential estate in Singapore's Central Region with Redhill at its heart. Use the MRT to settle in—Outram Park connects the East West and North East lines, while Tiong Bahru, Havelock and Redhill sit on the East West Line and Labrador Park and Telok Blangah on the Circle Line. Pick up a SimplyGo Ticket Office card for smooth travel, then spend the afternoon wandering the neighbourhoods: Tiong Bahru, Telok Blangah, Keppel, Cantonment and Havelock each have their own character. In the evening, head toward the Singapore River and Outram for a change of scene.

Day two: Give the day to Sentosa. Take the MRT to HarbourFront, where the Circle and North East lines meet, then cross via Sentosa Gateway using the Sentosa Express, the Cable Car or the Sentosa Broadwalk. Sentosa Island sits within the Southern Islands, and you can easily fill a day there before returning to Bukit Merah for the evening. If you prefer to stay local, the Bukit Merah Bus Interchange and the area's buses make it simple to reach Queenstown and Tanglin instead.

Day three: Use your last day to link the estate with the wider city. The East Coast Line and the Thomson line extend your reach, and Downtown Core is within easy range for a final look around. Return to Bukit Merah to explore Redhill and the surrounding streets at a slower pace, then finish with a meal in Tiong Bahru or Telok Blangah before heading to Outram Park for your onward journey.
