Bedok New Town

Introduction

Bedok is a residential town and planning area on Singapore's south-eastern coast, set within the Tanah Merah region. It sits between several other planning areas: Paya Lebar to the north, Hougang to the northwest, Tampines to the northeast and east, Geylang to the west, and Marine Parade to the southwest.

To the south and southeast, Bedok meets the Singapore Strait along a maritime boundary, giving the town its coastal edge.

Getting around

Singapore's public transport is the backbone of getting around, and Bedok is well served by rail and bus. Eleven MRT stations spread across three lines cover the planning area: the East–West Line (Tanah Merah, Bedok, Kembangan), the Downtown Line (Kaki Bukit, Bedok North, Bedok Reservoir), and the Thomson–East Coast Line (Marine Terrace, Siglap, Bayshore), with Bedok South and Sungei Bedok opening later. The lines run roughly parallel rather than meeting at Bedok station itself, so plan line changes in advance — switching between them usually means routing via another station. For the classic trip into the city, Bedok station on the East–West Line connects directly to central stations such as Raffles Place or City Hall in roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes. Tanah Merah is the interchange for the branch line to Changi Airport, putting the airport about ten to fifteen minutes away by rail.

Buses run from the Bedok Integrated Transport Hub, an air-conditioned interchange on Bedok North Road in the town centre, directly beside Bedok MRT station, which makes bus-to-rail transfers quick. Services are operated by SBS Transit and Go-Ahead, and this is where you pick up buses for journeys within the town and to nearby destinations such as East Coast Park. Taxis and ride-hailing (Grab being the common app) suit door-to-door trips, luggage, late nights, and places off the rail corridors; expect fares to rise at peak times, with surcharges on airport pickups. The town centre itself is walkable — the MRT station, bus interchange, Bedok Mall, food centre, library, sports complex, and Heartbeat @ Bedok are clustered together — but beyond it, distances between neighbourhoods are more comfortable by bus or rail, especially in the warm, humid climate. Cycling is an option along the signed paths of East Coast Park. Carry a stored-value fare card or contactless bank card so you can tap in and out across modes and benefit from transfers, and avoid the busiest commuting windows of roughly 8–9am and 6–7pm if you can.

Three days in Bedok New Town

Day one: Base yourself in Bedok and get your bearings at the Bedok Integrated Transport Hub, where buses and the East West Line meet at Bedok MRT. From here you can ride to Tanah Merah, Kembangan, Paya Lebar, Tampines or Hougang, or head west toward Raffles Place and City Hall. Spend the afternoon in Bedok North, walking Bedok North Road and the surrounding blocks, then eat at a hawker centre in the town.

Day two: Give the day to the water. Walk or cycle the paths of East Coast Park and take in the Singapore Strait, then continue along the coast through Marine Parade, Marine Terrace, Siglap and Bayshore. Use the Thomson-East Coast Line to link these stops, or connect via Bedok South and Sungei Bedok. In the evening, return to Bedok for dinner.

Day three: Head inland to Bedok Reservoir for a loop of the water and the parkland around it. If you want more city time, take the Downtown Line from Bedok North toward Kaki Bukit, Geylang or the city, or use the East West Line to reach Changi Airport. SBS Transit buses and the MRT make the whole town easy to cross, so you can fit in a last look at Bedok before you leave.
