Vaesteras

Introduction

Västerås sits in central Sweden on the shore of Lake Mälaren, in the province of Västmanland, roughly 110 kilometres west of Stockholm. It is the seat of Västerås Municipality, the capital of Västmanland County, and an episcopal see, which gives the city a administrative and ecclesiastical weight beyond its size.

Three days in Vaesteras

Day one: Start in Västerås and get your bearings along the waterfront of Lake Mälaren, where the city meets the water and the harbour area gives you a sense of how central the lake is to daily life here. Wander inland into the compact centre, taking in the streets and squares at an easy pace, and pause for a coffee or a meal when you need a break. In the afternoon, follow the shoreline further and watch the light change over the water — the lakeside is the natural place to end your first day in Västmanland.

Day two: Use Västerås as your base for exploring the surrounding Västmanland countryside, where farmland, forest and lake shore sit close together. Spend the morning by the water — Lake Mälaren opens out in every direction, and the shoreline around Västerås Municipality makes for an unhurried walk or cycle. In the afternoon, head back into town and give yourself time to linger in the centre, rather than rushing between sights.

Day three: Take a slower final day and enjoy Västerås without a fixed plan — a morning stroll by the lake, a look around the centre, and a proper lunch before you leave. If you're heading onward to Stockholm, the journey is straightforward, and travelling via Västmanland County gives you a last look at the landscape you've been exploring. Save some time simply to sit by Lake Mälaren before you go.
