Wad Medani
Introduction
Wad Madani is the capital of Al Jazirah state in Central Sudan, sitting on the west bank of the Blue Nile roughly 85 miles (136 km) southeast of Khartoum. The city is the hub of a cotton-growing region and the centre of local trade in wheat, peanuts, barley and livestock, and it serves as headquarters of the Irrigation Service. It is linked to Khartoum by rail.
Wad Madani is also a university city, home to the University of Gezira, the second biggest public university in Sudan, and to Wad Medani Ahlia University, a private institution.
Getting around
Wad Medani is compact, and its centre is made up of distinct, walkable quarters — the souq, Al Daraga, Al Gism Al Awal, Wad Azrag and the Sudanese District (formerly the British District). For everyday errands and sightseeing within the centre, walking is a sensible default, and the lively commercial activity and well-stocked souqs are best experienced on foot. Save taxis or bakassis for longer hops or when you are carrying luggage.
Two kinds of taxi can be flagged down from the roadside. Regular taxis carry a single passenger point-to-point and are unmetered, so agree the fare before you set off, every time. Bakassis are shared minibus taxis that run without fixed stops, picking up and dropping off passengers on request along their route; fares for both are inexpensive by international standards. Ride-hailing apps are not part of the transport picture here, so plan on hailing vehicles on the street or arranging them through your hotel. For reaching other parts of the country, the train to Khartoum is a genuine, efficient and inexpensive option, and private bus companies run reliable intercity coaches; in rural areas, rustic trucks often carry passengers but are considerably less comfortable, so stick to the established companies where you can. Car rental exists but is not a popular choice — fees are high and road travel carries risk in many areas — and if you do rent, choose a four-wheel-drive vehicle and avoid remote roads unless accompanied by a guide or local driver.
Three days in Wad Medani

Wander through the neighbourhoods to feel the contrast between the Sudanese District and the British District, then head toward the river to watch the Blue Nile. If you have time, look in on the University of Gezira or Wad Medani Ahlia University to get a sense of the city's academic life.
