Al Kharj

Introduction

Al-Kharj is a governorate in Riyadh Province, Saudi Arabia, situated southeast of the capital. It sits roughly 83 kilometres from Riyadh, making it a feasible stop for travellers exploring the region around the capital.

What is clear is its position within Riyadh Province and its proximity to the capital, which shapes it as a destination tied to the wider province rather than a standalone stop.

Getting around

Al Kharj is a car-oriented governorate, and getting around independently means relying on taxis, ride-hailing and private vehicles. There is no metro, tram or light-rail network here, and public transport within the governorate is limited. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are your most practical option both for moving between the main urban centre of Al-Saih and nearby towns such as Al-Dalam and Al-Yamama, and for reaching outlying sites like King Abdulaziz Palace in the Al-Aziziyah district of Al-Saih, Abu Jafan Palace east of Al-Saih, and the monuments of Al-Dalam. These points of interest are dispersed across different towns and districts rather than concentrated in one walkable area, so arrange your ride before you arrive at a drop-off point, which may not be a formal taxi rank.

Rail is not an option for visitors: although Al Kharj is connected to Riyadh and the Persian Gulf industrial ports by the Saudi Railways Company network, that infrastructure carries freight rather than passengers. The one public transport link that matters is the SATRANS intercity bus from Aziziyah Bus Station in Riyadh to Al Kharj, which runs four times daily with Standard and VIP interiors and averages about an hour for the ride itself. There is no direct connection from central Riyadh, so the trip involves the bus plus an onward transfer or walk; to reach Aziziyah Bus Station, take metro line 1 to the Transport Center and walk from there. At the Al Kharj end, plan to walk or arrange a transfer from the bus stop to your final destination. Because departures are infrequent, check timings and confirm your return options before travelling. Walking is realistic only for short hops, such as between a bus stop and a nearby building.

Three days in Al Kharj

Day one: Base yourself in Al Kharj, a city in Riyadh Province, Saudi Arabia, and use it as your starting point for the surrounding area. Begin with the King Abdulaziz Palace, then move on to the Aziziyah district, where you can find the Abu Jafan Palace. Because walking between sights is limited, plan on using taxis to get around. In the evening, head to Aziziyah Bus Station, the city's transport center, to get your bearings for the days ahead.

Day two: Travel out to Saih and Dalam, two spots within the Al Kharj area. Taxis are the practical way to reach them. If you would rather cover more ground, note that rail links exist: the Saudi Railways Company and SATRANS serve the region, with connections toward Riyadh and the Persian Gulf. Standard and VIP classes are available on these services.

Day three: Give Riyadh a day of its own, since it sits within reach of Al Kharj. The rail connection makes the trip straightforward, and taxis can fill in the gaps at either end. Keep the pace easy and let the transport options, rather than a fixed schedule, shape how much you see.
