Al Jubayl
Introduction
Jubail is an industrial city in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, sitting on the Persian Gulf. It is one of the province's main population centres, after the capital Dammam and Al Hofuf.
The city's identity is built on heavy industry: it is home to SABIC, the Middle East's largest petrochemical company, and to a major independent water and power plant that supplies both electricity and desalinated water. Expect a working port city rather than a resort town, with the Gulf shaping its horizon.
When to go
Jubail has a hot desert climate, so the year divides into a fiercely hot summer and a milder winter. In summer, high temperatures dominate, making daytime outdoor activity uncomfortable and pushing most sightseeing toward early morning or evening. Expect relentless sun and very little rain.
Winter is the coolest stretch of the year and the most comfortable time to be outside in Jubail. Days are mild enough for walking and exploring the corniche, though desert nights can still feel chilly.
Three days in Al Jubayl
Day one: Base yourself in Jubail, on Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province coast along the Persian Gulf, and spend your first hours getting your bearings in the city itself. Expect warm and humid conditions for much of the year, while winter days are milder and more comfortable for walking. Use the day to settle in and adjust to the pace of the Gulf coast before venturing further afield.
Day two: Head out towards Dammam to the south, one of the main urban centres of the Eastern Province, and continue on to Al Hofuf inland if you have the time. The contrast between the coast and the interior gives you a fuller sense of the region. Days here can be long and hot, so plan your movement around the cooler parts of the day.
Day three: Return to Jubail and give the city a proper look. It is closely associated with SABIC, the industrial giant whose presence has shaped the area, and that industrial character sits alongside the Gulf waterfront. In winter the weather is at its most pleasant, making this a good day to cover ground on foot before you leave the Middle East's Gulf coast behind.
