Al Hufuf

Introduction

Al-Hofuf, also known as Al-Hasa or Al-Ahsa, is the seat of the Al-Ahsa Governorate in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. It is one of the country's major cities, and the largest that is not a provincial capital.

You'll find the city known for its date production, counted among the largest date-producing areas anywhere, along with old markets and palaces that give it its character.

When to go

Al Hufuf has a hot desert climate, so timing your visit matters. Summers are long and very hot, with intense desert sun and little relief, so if you come in summer, plan any outdoor activity for the early morning or evening and expect extreme daytime heat. Winters are short and mild, making this the most comfortable time to be outside. Days are pleasant then, which suits exploring the oasis and the surrounding desert.

Three days in Al Hufuf

Day one: Start in Al Hufuf, the main city of the Al Ahsa oasis in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. Get your bearings in the Al Hasa area, where the oasis setting shapes daily life. Summers here are hot, so plan your walking for the cooler parts of the day; winters are mild and pleasant, making them the easier season for time outdoors.

Day two: Go deeper into the Al Ahsa Governorate and the wider Hasa region around Al Hufuf. Days fill quickly when you move between the oasis, the town and the surrounding area, so keep your schedule loose. It is the contrast between the city and the date-palm country that defines your time in Al Ahsa.

Day three: Use your last day in Al Hufuf to revisit whatever you liked most in Al Ahsa. You can spend it slowly in the Eastern Province, letting the pace of the oasis set your rhythm. If you are here in summer, keep to the shade; in winter, the days are comfortable enough to stay out longer.
