Orsk

Introduction

Orsk sits on the steppe in Orenburg Oblast, roughly a hundred kilometres southeast of the southern tip of the Ural Mountains and close to the Kazakhstan–Russia border. The Ural River runs through the city, so it straddles both banks.

Three days in Orsk

Day one: Start by getting your bearings in Orsk itself, a city in Orenburg Oblast where the Ural River divides the urban area between the European and Asian sides of the Ural Mountains. Walk the riverbanks to see how the water splits the city, and use your first day to settle into the rhythm of the streets and the views across to Kazakhstan on the southern horizon.

Day two: Give the day to the river and the mountain setting. Follow the Ural River as it winds through Orsk, watching how the current marks the boundary between Russia and Kazakhstan, and take in the low ridges of the southern Ural Mountains that frame the city. The weather here swings between warm summers and bitterly cold winters, so plan your walking according to the season.

Day three: Use your last day to look outward from Orsk across Orenburg Oblast and toward the Kazakh border. The river remains the constant reference point, flowing from the Ural Mountains through the city and on toward Kazakhstan, and a final slow pass along its banks ties together the three days you have spent at this meeting point of Russia and the steppe.
