Chertanovo Yuzhnoye
Getting around
Chertanovo Yuzhnoye is a residential district, so you'll get around the way Muscovites do: metro for long journeys, buses and light rail for short local hops, and taxis or ride-hailing for late nights and luggage. Metro Line 9 is your backbone — it runs from Bulvar Dmitriya Donskogo through the centre to Altufyevo, so you can ride north into the middle of Moscow and switch to other lines at interchange stations. For local trips, light rail routes 1 and 16 serve the district, with the nearest stop at Polyclinic about a minute's walk away; route 16 runs from early morning until well after midnight, which makes it useful for late returns. Several bus routes also thread through the residential streets, including 938, 947, 980, S916, S919, S941, S962, S986 and S997, linking the district with Metro Yuzhnaya, Annino, Yerino and Ostafyevskaya Street. Routes prefixed with "S" are local, while the numbered ones run further afield. Night route N8 (Solyanka) covers the small hours if you're out very late.
Bus stops are spread through the district but close to local landmarks: Polyclinic is about a minute's walk, South Chertanovo around six minutes, and Kirovogradskaya St., 25 near the Russian State University for the Humanities around nine minutes. That compactness means walking is a reasonable way to cover short local trips between Chertanovskaya Street, Kirovogradskaya Street and Akademika Yangelya Street, though you'll want the metro or a bus for anything heading into central Moscow. A suburban rail line in the Riga Direction, running between Nakhabino and Krasny Stroitel, is most useful if your plans take you beyond the city rather than into it. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely used and handy for the last mile between your accommodation and the nearest stop, or when you have luggage — agree the fare or confirm the app price before you set off. Moscow uses a unified ticketing system across metro, buses, trams and light rail, so one rechargeable card or pass covers most journeys; buy or top up at metro station ticket offices and machines, and keep the card handy to tap on every trip. From the airport, take an express rail link or a taxi into the city, transfer to Line 9, then finish on foot, by bus or by light rail from the local station.
Three days in Chertanovo Yuzhnoye
Day one: Start by getting your bearings on the Metro Line, using Bulvar Dmitriya Donskogo as your anchor — the name links this district to Moscow's wider story, and the station sits at the heart of Chertanovo Yuzhnoye. Wander the residential blocks to see how Muscovites live away from the centre, then follow Chertanovskaya Street and Kirovogradskaya Street to get a feel for the district's layout. If you need a practical stop, a polyclinic is among the local facilities you'll pass. End the day with a simple meal and an early night, since the district is quiet after dark.

Day two: Head out along Akademika Yangelya Street and Ostafyevskaya Street, two of the main routes through the area, and note how the district connects toward South Chertanovo and onward to Annino, Yerino and Metro Yuzhnaya. The Russian State University for the Humanities is a landmark worth orienting yourself by. For longer hops, buses and taxis fill the gaps the metro doesn't cover, and the Riga Direction rail line serves the wider area, with stops such as Nakhabino and Krasny Stroitel on the regional network. Keep the pace slow — this is a residential district, and its interest lies in everyday Moscow life rather than sights.

Day three: Use your last day to compare this edge of Moscow with another, taking the Metro Line toward Altufyevo in the north if you want a contrast, or staying local to revisit the streets you liked. Solyanka is a useful reference point for central Moscow if you plan to finish your trip in the middle of the city. Before you leave, sort out your onward transport — buses and taxis are straightforward, and the metro will carry you back toward the centre. Chertanovo Yuzhnoye rewards a short stay rather than a long one, so treat the third day as a gentle wind-down.
