Staryy Oskol

Introduction

Stary Oskol is a city in Belgorod Oblast, Russia, lying on the Oskol River far to the south of Moscow. Its name distinguishes it from Novy Oskol, a smaller settlement further south along the same river.

Beyond its position on the Oskol and its administrative home in Belgorod Oblast, the city is best understood as one half of a paired name — old and new — sharing a river and a region in Russia's south.

Three days in Staryy Oskol

Day one: Start in Stary Oskol itself, the city at the centre of this part of Belgorod Oblast, and take your bearings along the Oskol River, which gives the place its name and its shape. The riverside is the natural first stop, and from there you can wander the central streets to get a feel for how the city sits between the water and the surrounding countryside. Keep the day unhurried: this is a place to walk rather than to tick off sights, and the riverbank is where the city's character is easiest to read.

Day two: Head out to Novy Oskol, the neighbouring town that shares the river's name and makes an easy counterpart to Stary Oskol. The two are close enough to pair in a single day, and the contrast between them is the point of the trip. Beyond the built-up centre, the land opens into the countryside of Belgorod Oblast, so leave time simply to travel through it and watch the landscape change.

Day three: Use your last day to go further along the Oskol, following the river beyond the city and into the surrounding region. If you are returning to Moscow, keep the final hours loose so the journey back does not crowd out the morning. Its appeal lies in exactly this: a quiet corner of Russia where the river, the two Oskols and the open country around them set the pace.
