Rybnik
Introduction
Rybnik is a city in southern Poland, in the Silesian Voivodeship, set roughly 38 km southwest of Katowice, the regional capital, and about 19 km from the Czech border. It forms part of the Katowice-Ostrava metropolitan area and serves as the main city of the so-called Subregion Zachodni, an area previously known as the Rybnik Coal Area.
Its position in the far south of Poland puts both the Silesian conurbation and the Czech frontier within easy reach, making the city a practical base for exploring this corner of the region.
When to go
Rybnik has a humid continental climate, so your visit divides neatly into a cold winter and a mild-to-warm summer, with spring and autumn as transitions between the two. Winter here is cold, with frost and snow at times and short days, so plan outdoor sightseeing around the coldest hours rather than stretching it across the daylight. Summer is the warmest part of the year and the most comfortable for being outdoors — this is the season for walking the town and its surroundings.
Spring gradually warms out of the cold season but brings changeable weather, so layers are useful. Autumn cools steadily toward winter with increasingly unsettled weather; early autumn is the easier time for outdoor plans before the cold sets in.
