Lipa City
Introduction
Lipa is a component city in the province of Batangas, Philippines. It is one of the larger urban centres in the province, with a population recorded in the hundreds of thousands at the most recent census.
Getting around
Lipa has no rail, metro or tram network, so every journey here happens by road. The city sits on the main corridor south of Manila, linked by the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR), which also connect it to Batangas City. Buses are the main way in and out: a direct service runs from the DLTB LRT Buendia Station in Manila to SM Lipa Grand Terminal roughly hourly, taking about two hours. A cheaper but slower alternative is to travel from Pasay (EDSA) to the Starmall Footbridge in Muntinlupa, then pick up a bus from Alabang to Lipa. Expect at least one transfer whichever route you choose, since there is no direct bus from central Manila. Jam is one operator on the Manila–Lipa route, and tickets can be booked online through 12go.asia. Within the city, the SM Lipa Grand Terminal is the main bus hub and a useful landmark for finding onward transport.
Taxis and ride-hailing cars cover both the Manila–Lipa run and short hops around the city. Grab operates in the area, giving you a metered, app-based alternative to flagging a taxi; operators serving the area include Basic Taxi, Dollar Taxi, Green GSM, MGE Taxi and R&E Taxi. For the long leg from Manila, a taxi or ride-hailing car is the fastest door-to-door option but the most expensive; for short trips within Lipa, they are the most convenient. Lipa is sprawling rather than compact, with no pedestrian-friendly core described, so treat walking as a way to cover short distances around a single destination — a terminal, a mall, a hotel cluster — and plan on a bus, taxi or ride-hailing car for anything beyond a short stroll. Lipa has no commercial airport of its own, so you arrive via Manila and continue overland.
Three days in Lipa City
Day one: Arrive in Lipa from Manila by bus along the South Luzon Expressway and the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road, or from Batangas City. Buses leave from the DLTB LRT Buendia Station in Pasay, near the EDSA Starmall Footbridge, and from Alabang in Muntinlupa, and arrive at the SM Lipa Grand Terminal. Expect traffic on the way, so allow extra time. Within the city, get around by taxi - Basic Taxi, Dollar Taxi, Green GSM and MGE Taxi all operate here - or by Grab.
