Modakeke
Introduction
Modakeke is a town in the tropical forest of South West Nigeria, sitting beside Ile-Ife in Osun State. The community, also known as the Akoraye, has a history of valour at war and is known for prosperous farming. It lies roughly 45 kilometres from Osogbo, the Osun State capital, and about 90 kilometres from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo.
If your visit falls in December, you can time it around Akoraye Day, the town's major celebration. The surrounding tropical forest country and the town's farming heritage shape the character of the place.
Getting around
Modakeke is a compact, community-scale town, and you get around it by road. There is no metro, tram, or commuter rail serving the town, so your options are public buses, shared taxis and minibuses, private taxis, and walking. Because Modakeke sits immediately beside Ile-Ife, treat the two towns as a single practical area: many trips you will want to make — markets, larger transport connections, longer-distance departures — involve crossing into Ile-Ife.
The most notable formal bus service is the Osun State government's subsidised "Imole De Buses," which runs in both Ile-Ife and Modakeke; within Modakeke the route served is the Esuyare–Iraye road, so use that corridor as your reference point and combine the bus with a taxi or a walk if your destination lies elsewhere. Shared minibuses and taxis fill the gaps and are the flexible choice for crossing between the two towns — agree your fare before setting off and be clear about your destination. Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Nigerian cities, but don't assume reliable coverage in a town of Modakeke's size; treat app-based rides as a bonus and be ready to flag a taxi or ask at your accommodation to arrange a driver. Walking works well for short distances, though pavements may be limited or uneven and you will share the roadside with traffic, so keep to main routes in daylight and ask locally which roads are comfortable on foot. If you visit in December for Akoraye Day, expect travel to be busier than usual.
Three days in Modakeke
Day one: Start in Modakeke itself, getting your bearings in a town in South West Nigeria whose character is bound up with Ile-Ife and the wider Osun State. Take a walking look around the Akoraye area, and if your visit falls in December, you may find yourself caught up in Akoraye Day, when people gather to celebrate. Use the day to settle in and get a feel for the place rather than rushing between sights.
Day two: Use Modakeke as your base for the wider region. Shared rides and the Imole De buses connect the town with neighbouring places, so you can head out towards Ife or Osogbo and return in the evening. Keep your plans loose and let the transport set your pace; the roads between towns are part of the experience.
Day three: Spend your last day closer in, revisiting the parts of Modakeke you liked and taking a slower walk through Esuyare and Iraye. If you have time, consider a longer trip towards Ibadan or Oyo, though these are best saved for a future visit. Finish with a meal in town and an early night if you are travelling onward.
